Schlatt never thought he'd be a parent, a good one at that. He had a quiet life, and he liked it that way. But one day, a girl had appeared at his parents door. He had just been shopping for his mom and when he came back to the apartment he saw her about to fall asleep as she sat on the floor, leaned against the wall near his door.
Schlatt was taken aback, and for a moment he didn't know what to do. She had looked to be a very young age, Schlatt's guess was one, maybe two. Though he was confused from the start, (it was 2018, why are kids ending up on his doorstep?), he didn't act scared or look around nervously as if someone was using this girl as a trap. Because then if it truly was a trap, he wouldn't want to look like a baby.

He crouched down and lightly shook the girl on the shoulder, she woke up and just looked at him with wide eyes. He asked the little girl who she was, and where her parents were, but the girl just stared at him blankly. It was then that he realized she was alone. Schlatt was overwhelmed. He had no idea what to do, and he began to feel uncomfortable. He wanted to help her, but he also didn't want to be responsible for her. "Are you alone?" He asked her to confirm his suspicions. That was a question she replied to, she nodded. He glanced down at her knees, they were bruised. "Is someone hurting you?" He whispered to her softly, scared someone was listening in. He set the three bags he had down on the floor next to him. She shook her head, seeming to be hesitant. "That's good-- uhm.. are you hurt though? Let-Let's go inside for a second..? I won't hurt you, I've got an ice pack we can put on your knees, and I'll call the cops so they can get you back home.. got it?" He stood up and took his key from out of his pocket, he unlocked the door as he stared down at the girl. His parents were gone, so he would be alone with the girl.

She hesitated, but stood and watched as he grabbed his bags before she followed him inside. Schlatt did exactly what he said he would do. He had sat her on the couch and gave her an ice pack before he left the room and called the cops. "Hello, 911 what's your emergency?" The operator spoke into the phone.

Schlatt rubbed the back of his neck, he poked his head out the door frame and glanced at the girl as she held the ice pack on her knee. "Yeah.. hi, uh, I've got this-- this kid, in my house? She kinda was just.. outside my apartment, her knees are all beat up, I gave her an ice pack and now she's just sitting on the couch" he explained to the operator in a I'm confused myself voice.
