The water surged into the rocks, filling every nook, cranny, and crack. Then it receded as fast as it came, leaving the same spaces empty except for small creatures in the tidepools. Something that was sure to continue until the dusk of man.
Not far below, a girl sat on a submerged rock shelf, teasing a small crab out of the gap between a what was once a tire and an engine block, though the nature of these strange lumps of metal was alien to her. She only knew the rumbling beast it had belonged to crashed off the cliff above about two blue moons before, and the sea had taken all the other pieces. The girl giggled at the small blue creature as it snapped a tiny pincer at her outstretched finger. She ran her fingers through her hair, settling on a piece of prickle coral she had collected in the warmer waters twelve moons ago.
As she set the coral in front of the crab, she heard the cliff song start. Hurriedly, she kicked up from the rock shelf towards the surface. She stuck her head above the waves, taking a gulp of the crisp night air. She rested her air on a bit of rock jutting from the base of the cliff as she savored the song. It was like the dancing lights in the sky above the cold waters, but made of sound. It always came not long after the angry clouds were visible from the rock shelf. Her cliff song.
