I had not known how to respond to Louis's question (it had taken me forty five minutes of me staring at a wall pondering the possibilities before Louis simply stated that if I didn't say anything he would tell Mr. Jupiter I was being a bitch again) but here I am, glancing at the clock waiting for him to pick me up. My knee bounces up and down as I tried to hold it into place. I scratch my arm, tracing the spot where my scar was. The one I had gotten because of him. I close my eyes as hot tears brim. I face in my hands and pull my knees up to my chest trying to shake the memory.
***FLASHBACK***
"THIS IS BECAUSE OF HAYDEN, ISN'T IT?" Louis screams as I slam the screen door.
"MAYBE, MAYBE NOT!" I scream back turning around.
"GET OVER IT WAS JUST A KISS!" he yells.
"OH IT WAS A HELL LOT MORE THAN THAT!" I scream back. I dig my nails into my palms drawing blood.
"WOULD YOU JUST CALM DOWN!" he hisses back.
"Why did you do it?" I whisper leaning my head up against the kitchen wall trying to slow my rapid heart beat. I was still trying to process everything. How could he? My Louis, mine, do that to, of all people, me.
"I-I uh..." he stutters rubbing the back of his neck.
"Is it because I'm not good enough for you," I say raising my voice. My eyes connect with his to see all the hurt and confusion. He just shakes his head. I take a shaky breath a walk over to the knife drawer pulling out one of them. I hold the blade to my skin.
"Tell me truth. Please tell me why I'm not good enough for you." I saw slowly piercing my skin.
"Dawn stop, your being ridiculous!" he says walking up to me and trying to rip the knife from my grasp. I push him off and start to slide the blade down my arm, biting my lip as the blood starts to flow down my arm.
"Tell me what I did and I'll stop." I respond opening my eyes slightly. Louis just stares at the ground.
"Please stop. For me?" he whimpers giving me a puppy dog face. The same one my old, gullible self had fallen for. I shake my head continuing to cut the thin line down my arm. Spots start to dance in my vision as a naseous feeling takes over me.
"Louis..." I beg being to feel light headed.
"You weren't the one," he mumbles as I slip into darkness.
***END OF FLASHBACK***
The ring of the doorbell snaps me too my sense as I open the apartment door slipping on my coat. Louis stands there with his cheeky grin in black pants and a white button up shirt with suspenders holding a red carnation. He spins it between his fingers before handing it to me.
"Thanks," I mumble taking it and placing it on the table next to the door.
"Ready?" he asks sticking out his hand. I hesitantly grab it, feeling a spark dance on my fingertips, then quickly retracting my hand. Clearly I wasn't the only one who felt it because when I look up, Louis is already staring at me. We walk to the elevator in silence. We step in (the elevator being repaired after this morning) and the door shuts behind us. In the background "Lego House" by Ed Sheeran plays as an uncomfortable silence surrounds us.
I'm gonna pick up the pieces,
And build a Lego house
If things go wrong we can knock it down
My three words have two meanings,
There's one thing on my mind
It's all for you
And it's dark in a cold December, but I've got you to keep me warm
If you're broken I will mend you and I'll keep you sheltered from the storm that's raging on now
I'm out of touch, I'm out of love
I'll pick you up when you're getting down
And out of all these things I've done I think I love you better now
I'm out of sight, I'm out of mind
I'll do it all for you in time
And out of all these things I've done I think I love you better now
Louis sings along when the lights flicker and the elevator stops, leaving us in pitch blackness. Clearly the repair men hadn't known what they were doing. My breathing quickens and I hear Louis chuckle beside me as I slap his arm. The song is still playing in the background though. His hand searches in the darkness before grabbing my wrist and pulling me against his body. I catch a whiff of cinnamon as his arm snakes around me while his other presses the glowing emergency button.
As we wait for someone to answer Louis grabs my waist and starts swaying to beat. I hesitantly wrap my arms around his neck as he chuckles. He bends his mouth down, his nose skimming my cheek, so it's next to my ear.
"This is the fastest I've danced in the dark with a girl on a first date." He smirks. I quickly jerk away, my checks instantaneously growing pink. He chuckles as the speaker crackles, the maintenance guys finally responding to our call to help.
I lean against the wall as Louis chats with the men as I secretly stare at him. I still get goosebumps watching his mouth pull up into a slight smirk as he talks and the way his biceps nearly rip his shirt as he crosses his arms. He turns and glances at me as I redirect my gaze to the ground. I hear him chuckle slightly as the elevator shakes and then begins to move again.
Once we finally get off the elevator, Louis takes my hand as he leads me to a black Maserati. He walks over the driver's seat and hops in as I hesitantly stare at the passenger seat.
"Are you going to get in or what?" Louis asks poking his out the window. I nod and clamber into the seat.
I didn't know what was going to happen tonight but I knew I wasn't prepared for what was to come.
