"Say it was a "code 4" on the walkie-talkie or you both die".
The officer with the walkie-talkie in hand didn't answer, he just stared blankly in the eyes. Time was going by and I didn't have time to chit-chat.
"DO YOU WANT A BULLET TOO OR WHAT?!? YOU HEARD ME, SAY IT WAS A CODE 4, NOW !!"
After a while, he stopped staring and asked:
"How do you know what "code 4" stands for..?"
(Notice: Code 4 is a way for the police of saying that the situation is under control and that they do not need backup."
"I had eyes everywhere as I grew up. So do we have a deal or do you want one in the leg too like your buddy right here?"
The officer gave a quick look to his partner before stating in the walkie-talkie "We got a code 4".
"Very well, now turn around and close the door of the room over there and stay there", I said, pointing to the bathroom.
My head was empty. No fear nor regret was coming out, even though I just shot an officer in the leg. I stared coldly as he did what I asked and as soon as he was out of sight, I got up and let the gun fall on the floor, realizing just now, what I just did. I longly stared at the officer's body as he was bleeding out.
The adrenaline left my mind and sat down in a corner, grabbing my head in my hands.
My whole body was trembling and I was starting to feel the fear become more and more suffocating.
"Max..., I'm sorry, I didn't want to shoot, I just had no idea what to do and I..."
He didn't say a word. He calmly got up and came to sit beside me. He still had that sparkle of gratitude in his look and it was seriously making me wonder does he even know how bad the situation we are in is?
There was a slight moment of silence in which my heartbeat came back to the normal rhythm and my body stopped shaking. I looked over at my friend and he seemed perfectly calm.
"Dienne, I'm not angry because you shot him. It's the opposite, I'm really really grateful"
Tears filled his eyes as he said:
"Nobody ever made such a reckless thing just to keep me safe. So in the worst scenario, even if you made me a promise, I wouldn't have been mad. The fact you already lied for me and risked going to jail for betrayal, it's already enough. No one ever did such thing for me. So thank you."
Oh.... So that's why he didn't look upset..
"Well, what type of person would I be if I just said « Oh yeaaaa the suspect is hiding in my room»?"
"Haha, You're so stupid, Dienne", Max said, chuckling.
We ended up having a good laugh. It was certainly more of a nervous laugh but it was really funny. We laughed until tears came out and our stomachs hurt, not worrying about anything else in the world. Not the futur or the past, we were simply living in the present and it felt amazing !
But I have a question for you, dear reader...
Why doesn't anything good last?
After a good 5 minutes of laughing non-stop, we managed to get up.
"Who would've thought we would, one day, be in this situation but instead of panicking because we literally just shot a cop, we would be laughing?!", I said, chuckling.
"Hahahahahahahahaha-......ha?"
"Maxie? What's wrong? Why the sudd-"
"SHUT UP AND LISTEN !!"
