The next month flies past. With end of semester projects, Thanksgiving, and exams blurring together. This is our last week before Christmas break, thank goodness. Then 2 ½ weeks of freedom. But before that, the Winter Chorus concert is this Friday. It's crazy to think that after, I'll only have one more concert of my Highschool career. I push it to the back of brain.
Thankfully, I haven't had any run-ins with Devon since the party. Overall, my life has been pretty uneventful. I meet up with Isla to go to our last rehearsal before the concert tomorrow.
"So, do you have any plans for the break?" She asks.
"Nope, just work, and relaxing." I say shrugging.
Isla is going to visit some family for the break. She leaves Saturday, unfortunately.
"Good to know..." She says, trailing off while smiling mischievously.
"Why is that good to know? Why are you making that face?"
"What face?" She asks, innocently. She forgets I know her.
"You look like a cartoon villain making an evil plan."
"Oh, shut up." She huffs. "I'm just glad you're finally relaxing. That's all." She smiles.
Narrowing my eyes. "Yeah...okay. I'm going to act like I don't know that you're hiding something from me."
The next day, all of the students in the Choral department are seated in the auditorium. The regular chorus students are wearing all black. The show choir students are in our special concert attire, which is honestly unflattering but, what can you do? The girls are in mid-length royal blue dresses, very odd given our school color is navy. As we enter, parents and peer applaud lightly. The show choir students sit in a roped off area just for us, while the regular choir walk and file in on the risers. The difference between us two is that we, the show choir, have to choreograph our numbers. The regular choir just stands and sings on the risers. That and we had to audition for the show choir.
As our teacher starts the pre-show announcements, I turn and scan the room finding my family, Isla's family, along with Kaleb and Calvin. I smile knowing I have such a great support system.
After the regular choir finishes their pieces, we walk up on to the stage as they make their way to the audience to sit. We stand in our places and the house lights dim as the stage lights come on. This is the part I love. The slight tension right before the show begins. I scan the audience again and notice there's a third person next to Kaleb and Calvin, but I can't tell from the glare of the lights. Probably a sibling or a friend.
I love being on stage. There's nothing like it. It's like I get to turn off Arynn and all her problems and become someone else. I come alive under the lights. I haven't felt what I feel when I'm on stage doing anything else in my life. It's beautiful.
We absolutely nail our numbers; everyone stands and applauds. A standing ovation. The lights flicker on and off as the audience applauds. In those moments, I see who is with Calvin and Kaleb. Is that? No, it can't be.
Bennett. Freaking. Davis.
As if a stage smile can be any brighter, I beam. I look over to Isla and she mouths 'Surprise!'. 'Thank you.' I mouth back.
After the applause ends, we make our way back to our seats so our teacher can give the post-show announcements. I look back and lock eyes with Bennett. He winks at me.
'You're here!' I mouth. He nods and responds 'I am.'
I start to bounce my leg up and down, buzzing with anticipation. When my teacher finally finishes, I jump up and I start briskly walking towards Bennett, not even waiting for Isla. Its all I can do to not break out in a full sprint.
I gain a bit of speed when I close in on him and he catches me in his arms as we hug. I notice 2 things as I hug Bennett. One; he's so warm and hugging me so tight I'm basically hovering above the floor. And two; he smells so freaking good. He definitely got a new cologne and I love it.
"You're here!" I practically shout.
"I thought we established this already." I feel his chest move up and down as he chuckles. "You were amazing up there. I love watching you perform."
"Thank you." I say as we pull out of the hug. I turn and see Isla, Kaleb, and Calvin all just staring at us with smug grins on there face. I go to look at Bennett, but he's already looking at me, seemingly oblivious to the 3 pairs of eyes on us.
"My turn for a hug, B." Isla says walking towards Bennett. While they talk, I go say hi to my family before they leave. When I come back, all my friends are waiting for me.
"Come on." Bennett says as he puts an arm on my shoulder. "We're going out to dinner to celebrate."
"That is an excellent idea bro." Calvin says as we make our way out of the auditorium.
"Okay, but Arynn and I need to go change first. We'll be right back." Isla says yanking my arm and all but running towards the dressing room backstage. When we get there and she closes the door, she turns to me.
"Do you like your surprise?" She says as we start to change.
"I do. Thank you. How long has this plan been going on?" I ask.
"Since around Thanksgiving. Bennett messaged us and asked to keep it a secret from you."
"Of course, he did." I say smiling.
"You're usually happy when he comes but this is different."
"What do you mean?"
"Oh, nothing." She smiles as she packs her stuff up. "Ready?"
"Yeah, let's go."
It's been a while since Bennett has visited. He only came for a week at the beginning of summer because that's all he could take off at work. I am very excited he's here. I'll have to ask him how long he's here for. He's more than likely staying with Reid, and I know he'll want to spend time with him. Maybe we can catch a movie or binge several movies like we used to. God, I missed him so much.
