"YOU HAVING FUN?" theo asked crew.
they laid next to each other on the mesh overhang of theo's family boat. penelope was with them too, but she was asleep under crew and theo knew she wouldn't wake up even if they were talking.
"i like the boat," crew played with the string holding his mother's top together.
"me too," theo gave an exaggerated nod.
"theo?"
"crew?"
"are you my dad?"
theo choked on his breath, "what- why- why would you ask that?"
"are you? or no?" he said it in such a casual way that only a child could.
"do you want me to be?"
"i think so," crew gave a soft nod. "mummy likes you a lot and you're nice."
"she likes me a lot?" he couldn't help but be a bit curious.
"mhm. but she gets sad sometimes. but if you were my dad, you could make her happy so she isn't sad anymore."
"crew... i don't know what to say. i think you should talk to your mum." penelope would probably kill him if he talked to crew about this.
there was a plan. a plan that had to be followed.
"so no?"
"can you keep a secret?"
a small smile grew on his face, and crew nodded.
"i am. and i made a mistake when you were still growing in your mummy that i'm working very hard to fix. but you pinky promise not to tell her i told you?" theo held his pinky out.
"pinky swear." he wrapped his finger around his father's much bigger one. "you make her sad?"
"i do. and it makes me sad. if she'll have me, i'd like to make her happy again, but i know that's a big promise."
"no pinky promise?" crew's little face scrunched up.
"some things are far too important to be able to pinky promise."
