April 29 2021, Thursday

It was Chuuya's birthday that day... Chuuya didn't care though. His birthday was just another day for him for past 10 years. It was just a reminder of the loses he had.

The sun was setting slowly, painting the sky to pink and orange. Chuuya's situation got worse by this time. He had hardly slept for a month. Even the strongest pills wouldn't help him to sleep. No matter how much he drank alcohol, it didn't help him to sleep.

Chuuya was walking back to home. He had visited the cemetery just like he did for a few past years. After all he wouldn't be able to do this anymore someday. As he was walking to his flat, he noticed the door was open.

Chuuya's heart began beating fast in fear. Did he forget the door open? He has been getting pretty forgetful recently, but how could he be that careless? He walked inside cautiously to look around. He almost had a heart attack when he saw the tall figure in front of him.

Dazai turned around, slightly relieved by Chuuya's safe return. He knew he would get a good punch from Chuuya, but he couldn't help himself and hugged him. He couldn't notice it in the dark, but with the help of the moonlight which was coming from the window, he could see that the dark bags under Chuuya's eyes were darker now and his situation was worse now.

Unlike Dazai expected, Chuuya didn't push him away. He wrapped his arms around Dazai's waist as if he wouldn't be able to hug Dazai ever again.

"I'm sorry for breaking into your house like that, Chuuya." Dazai whispered in his ear as he hugged Chuuya tightly. Even if Chuuya wanted it or not, Dazai wanted to be with him at that moment.

"I have something..." Chuuya said in his low, hoarse voice.

"Is it something good?" Dazai asked, trying to use his usual sarcastic self despite the fact that he was feeling restless deep inside...

Chuuya didn't reply, he just grabbed Dazai's hand and took him to his room.

"Sit down." Chuuya ordered and took out some papers from the drawers. They seemed like diagnosis papers... Dazai wondered why Chuuya visited hospital. He took the papers.

He now understood why Chuuya told him to sit down... Because as he was reading the diagnosis papers, Dazai felt his knees were getting weaker...

Name: Nakahara Chuuya.

Diagnosis: Familial Fatal Insomnia.

The word 'fatal' reverberated in his mind over and over. Dazai felt his knees buckle and collapsed onto Chuuya's bed. "Chuuya... This is..."

"Yes, Dazai. Just as you think, I'm dying." Chuuya said it like it was a normal thing, but Dazai knew his former partner than anyone. He could see the fear Chuuya was trying to hide. "What will happen now? Will you just sit and wait to die?" Dazai asked, not able to take the confused and frustrated aura that Chuuya was giving off.

"What else I can do?" Chuuya said with a calm and factual tone that was beyond emotion.

Dazai looked up at Chuuya and what he saw was something he never thought it was possible. A lifeless and dull Chuuya, the shell of whatever left from his former partner and, even though he couldn't confess to himself, the person he loved and cared the most.
