December 25 2021, Saturday

It was Christmas. A day when almost everyone is happy. Except Chuuya. He just laid in the bed as the clock on the wall ticked away the minutes cruelly, reminding the time that was running out.

He heard the faint chatter and laughter from the streets below. Christmas carols played in the distance, adding to the cheerful atmosphere that left him feeling more isolated than ever. A quiet sob escaped his lips, and he pulled the covers over his head.

As the crisp winter breeze blew through the city, Dazai returned home, his footsteps echoing through the empty hallway. As he opened the door to the bedroom, he was met with the sight which he had been familiar for months. But with one difference. Chuuya's body was so weak now that he couldn't even move. The sound of laughter from the streets outside seemed to mock Chuuya's desperation and pain.

Dazai gently closed the door behind him, casting a worried look at Chuuya. He didn't need to be told about the worsening symptoms; he could see it for himself. He walked over to the bed and sat down beside Chuuya. "Chuuya, I'm home," he said softly, placing his hand on Chuuya's hair.

Chuuya shivered at the touch, and his voice was little more than a strained whisper. "Did you get the case solved?" He asked, his eyes still hidden beneath the covers.

Dazai nodded. "Yes, but it's not what I'm worried about," he replied, pulling the covers down to cup Chuuya's cheek "Is there anything I can do to help you?"

Chuuya shook his head, the movement causing a visible strain on his weak body. "The hallucinations are getting worse," he said, his grip tightening on the sheets. "My mother... Her face... It's distorted... And my sister... Her eyes... They are... Like two hollow voids..."

Dazai's heart ached at the fear and despair in Chuuya's voice. He leaned in closer, trying to offer what little comfort he could. "It's okay," he whispered.

Chuuya's body trembled, and he let out a pained gasp as his hallucinations grew more intense. His mother's distorted face loomed over him, her mouth opening wide to reveal rows of sharp, jagged teeth. His sister's hollow eyes seemed to bore into his very soul, and he could feel her icy grip on his arm.

Dazai watched in horror as Chuuya's body began to contort and twist as if being consumed by some unseen force. His muscles spasmed and convulsed, and his bones creaked and groaned under the strain. Chuuya's screams echoed through the room, and Dazai could only watch in helpless despair as the hallucinations took their toll.

As suddenly as it had begun, the seizure stopped, and Chuuya's body went limp. His eyes were wide and unfocused, and his breathing was shallow and rapid. Dazai could see the fear and confusion in Chuuya's gaze, and he knew that the hallucinations were still there, just beyond the veil of reality.

"I will help you someway, somehow," Dazai whispered, his eyes glistening with the unshed tears.

But even as he spoke the words, Dazai knew that they were empty. There was nothing he could do to stop the progression of Chuuya's familial fatal insomnia, nothing he could do to ease his pain unless there were a miracle. And as Chuuya's hallucinations grew more and more intense, Dazai could only watch in helpless despair as his beloved slipped further and further away from him, trapped in a world of nightmares from which there was no escape.

The morning passed slowly, each minute feeling like an hour. Chuuya's hallucinations came and went, his body trembling and convulsing at times. Dazai stayed by his side, talking to him, holding his hand, and trying to keep him grounded in reality. The Christmas cheer outside seemed like a cruel contrast to the torment inside their apartment.

By midday, Chuuya's exhausted body slumped against the pillows. "Dazai," he whispered, his voice hoarse. "I think I see them again... My mother and sister. They look so... Monstrous."

"They are not real, Chuuya," Dazai said softly. "Tell me what you see."

Chuuya's eyes went wide with terror, and his voice trembled as he described the hallucinations. "Their faces are melting, Dazai... My mother's mouth... It's full of sharp teeth... And my sister... Her eyes are just black holes... They are reaching for me, Dazai... I can feel their cold hands..."

Dazai tightened his grip on Chuuya's hand. "They can't hurt you, Chuuya. They are just figments of your mind. I'm here with you. They are not real."

Tears streamed down Chuuya's face as he struggled against the hallucinations. His body shook with the effort, and his breathing became ragged.

As the afternoon turned to evening, Dazai decided to try a different approach. "Chuuya, do you remember the time we went to that festival together? The one with all the fireworks?"

Chuuya's eyes flickered, his mind trying to latch onto the memory. "Yeah," he said slowly. "I remember. The fireworks were beautiful. We stayed up all night, didn't we?"

Dazai nodded, a small smile on his lips. "Yes, we did. It was a magical night. We had so much fun, just the two of us. Do you remember the food stalls? You insisted on trying every single one."

Chuuya's lips twitched into a faint smile. "And you kept complaining about how much money I was spending," he said, his voice a bit stronger. "But you still paid for everything."

"Of course," Dazai said, chuckling. "I couldn't let you miss out on anything. You were so happy that night. It was worth every penny."

As night fell, the apartment grew quiet again. Dazai prepared a simple dinner, though he knew Chuuya would barely eat. He brought a tray to the bed and sat beside Chuuya, coaxing him to take a few bites.

"Just a little, Chuuya," Dazai urged gently. "You need to keep your strength up."

Chuuya managed a few bites, but his appetite was nonexistent. "I'm not hungry," he murmured, pushing the tray away slightly.

Dazai nodded, not wanting to press him further. "It's okay..."
