"Are you sure about this, Ne-san?" Kiriya’s voice was soft, full of uncertainty.
I nodded, trying to sound confident. "I’m sure."
"But Father told us to stay inside... especially before the sun sets," he insisted, glancing nervously at the darkening sky.
I chuckled lightly, hoping to ease his worries. "Come on, Kiriya! What’s the point of life without a little adventure?"
At the time, I thought it was harmless fun. Just a small thrill. But I was wrong.
We wandered too far into the woods, farther than we ever had before. As night fell, the familiar path home disappeared, and we found ourselves lost. Kiriya clung to my hand, his grip tightening with every unfamiliar sound around us.
"It’s okay, Kiriya," I whispered, trying to keep my own fear hidden. "We’ll find our way back. Don’t worry."
But deep down, I was starting to worry too. The trees seemed taller and more menacing in the moonlight, and the air felt heavy, like we were being watched.
Then, out of the silence, came a low, eerie laugh.
Kiriya gasped, his eyes wide with fear. "What… what was that, Ne-san?"
My heart raced, but I tried to stay calm. "Stay close," I whispered, my mind racing for a plan. I knew what we were up against. A demon. And I had to protect Kiriya, no matter what.
The sinister voice echoed again, closer this time. "Hehehe… fresh prey, just what I was hoping for."
I bent down to Kiriya, keeping my voice steady. "Listen to me, Kiriya. When I say run, you run as fast as you can. Don’t look back, just find help or get home."
"But, Ne-san, I can’t leave you!" Kiriya pleaded, tears welling in his eyes.
I forced a smile, though my heart ached. "I’ll be fine. But if anything happens, tell Father and everyone else that I love them."
Before Kiriya could protest, the demon’s voice called out again, its presence chilling the air. "Found you…"
"GO, KIRIYA! RUN!" I yelled, pushing him forward.
Kiriya hesitated, then sprinted into the trees, his small figure disappearing into the darkness. I turned to face the demon, who was now looming before me, its eyes gleaming with malice.
"You think you can stop me?" it sneered. "Once I’m done with you, I’ll go after him."
Those words struck a chord deep within me. My fear melted away, replaced by a fierce determination. I had to protect Kiriya, no matter the cost.
"OVER MY DEAD BODY!!!" I shouted, bracing myself for the fight.
I punched and punched and punched...The struggle felt like it went on forever, but as dawn began to break, the demon’s strength faded with the rising light. Exhausted, I dropped to my knees, relief washing over me.....I could barely feel the blood going down my hands and face...
It wasn’t long before help arrived. A group of Kakushi, along with the towering figure of Gyomei, the Stone Hashira, found me. His kind eyes softened with tears as he gently placed a hand on my shoulder.
"Poor child..." Gyomei whispered, his voice filled with sorrow.
I was only eleven years old.
And Kiriya was just five.
