He finally looked up at me.
"You do?"
I nodded silently. After thinking for another half minute, I spoke up again.
"If I want to tell you something about me, will you listen?"
I did not know why, but at that moment, I felt an urge to describe why I believed in coincidences and ill-timed destinies. Especially to him.
"Of course." He said with a hint of curiosity in his voice.
I sighed, gathering all my strength to explain my biggest nightmare to anyone other than my best friend.
"It was a Friday night...." I said, my mind wandering off to that dreadful night years ago. "I whined to my father to take me on a ride in his car. Anywhere he wanted."
Beside me, Jungkook stiffened, clearly eager to hear every bit of my words clearly.
"So he took our whole family on a long drive. Me, mom and him. It was all going good, I was....really enjoying....when......" I gulped harshly, attempting to swallow the lump forming in my throat. I must not cry, certainly not in front of Jungkook.
"A big truck which we failed to see approached at the speed of light, without any horns or headlights. Our car....collided head on and....."
I took a deep breath in an attempt to pull in the tears brimming on my eyes. Jungkook's gentle hand lay on my shoulder. He did not try to say anything, just caressing me in an attempt to soothe me.
"All of us were taken to the hospital, but only I survived. My luck would have been more terrible, had not one my father's friends decided to take me in. His daughter is my best friend, Kim Jisoo. She is in class C. You might know her."
The look on his face was enough to tell that he did not seem to know her. Sighing, I said, "So you see, who would believe in coincidences more than me?"
He took a long breath and looked down.
"Jungkook, what I want to say is that, there are people in this world who are far more distressed than you were when you hurt your knee."
Jungkook's head snapped towards me.
"How do you know that?"
"Since I had no way to understand why you were behaving so strangely or how to pull you out of this, I decided to ask Seungmin and Junseon about you. I am sorry."
He did not speak, but his face did not seem to show any kind of look of displease as well. So I got the strength to continue my words.
"I know what happened in the duel between you and Cheon Muho 2 years ago. I know how much you suffered to not be able to do Taekwondo. I know how passionate you are about that. Now since you have mustered enough courage and returned, why are you backing off again?"
Jungkook lowered his head again, this time focussing on the coffee cup in his hand.
"You know a lot..." He abruptly spoke. "But there is still some things which you don't. My duel with Cheon Muho....was not an ordinary one."
My curiosity perked up at that. This wasn't something that Seungmin and Junseon told me. But at the same time, Jungkook was opening up. This was a good thing.
"If you want, you can tell me." He looked up at me. I shrugged. "I am not in any position to judge anyone anyway."
Sighing, he lifted his coffee cup to his mouth and took a sip.
"Two years ago, me and Muho studied in the same school. Yangeun High School. We were best of friends as well...."
Wait! Jeon Jungkook and Cheon Muho were best friends?
