Felix was at Charlotte's side in a flash, his arms wrapped around her, pulling her backwards. She could be harmed if she found herself in the middle of the fray.

"Smettila ora!", she cried out, but neither man was listening. "Stop!" she tried again. It was useless. Aro and Marcus were locked in combat, unable to hear her pleas.

Marcus had his hands around Aro's throat, attempting to separate his head from his body. His anger blinded him to all thought and reason. He had only one desire...to destroy the man responsible for taking the life of his beloved Didyme.

Aro fought back, once he knew Marcus was seriously trying to kill him. They flipped around the room, the watching coven members scattering. Marcus had Aro on the floor, both hands around his neck, his eyes black with rage. Aro managed to twist his body to fight his way out of Marcus' grasp. He flew to the other side of the room, then turned, and with a running start, launched himself at Marcus, taking him down to the marble floor. Cracks appeared in the tiling where Marcus had hit, Aro hovering over him, fury in his darkened eyes.

Their judicial robes had been torn off both men during the fight, pieces of black fabric lying on the audience hall floor.

The guards stood frozen. This was not their fight, so they decided their only course of action was to protect the other covens, directing them out of the throne room. The Romanians wanted to stay to watch the fight, not wanting to miss seeing Aro destroyed, but Jane gave them a threatening look. Rather then endure the pain she wielded, they left with the others.

Felix had dragged Charlotte up the dais stairs, forcing her to sit on her chair. He stayed at her side while watching the two vampire leaders brawl it out.

The taller vampire pushed at Aro's shoulders with a deep growl, sending him flying across the room. In a half second, he was on Aro. Marcus had him in a death grip, fracture lines appearing on the Volturi master's flawless face. With a strong push, he forced Marcus off him, the cracks already healing. With a shout, Aro reached out and grabbed Marcus in his arms, throwing him against the wall, which crumbled under the force of the impact.

Before Aro had the opportunity to attack Marcus again, the other vampire threw himself at Aro, finding himself holding him against the wall. His hands lay beneath Aro's chin, pushing upward. The faint sound of cracking ceramic was audible to those few still in the room. Above the sound, Marcus heard words, a quiet plea that held enough emotion to penetrate his focused rage.

"Marcus, no! Please, don't kill him." He looked over to see Charlotte, her eyes filled with tears. Her impossible human tears. In what he would later think of as being a moment of weakness, he let Aro go, and stood glaring down at his brother. His gaze rested on Charlotte, knowing he could not hurt her. He would not be responsible for destroying her mate. Instead, he fled the room in the blink of an eye.

Aro stood, brushing imagined dust off his suit and turned toward Charlotte, noticing the look of pain in her eyes and the tears that flowed down her cheeks. He flashed to her side, but she rose from her chair once Felix had left her side to go stand with Demetri.

"Don't, Aro. Don't touch me. Don't speak to me. Just...stay away." She speed-ran from the room and headed to their chambers. She paced the ante-room, unsure what to do. But she knew she couldn't stay here. She had nothing to say to Aro. She went to the wardrobe and began throwing clothing into her larger suitcase.

Her mind was a jumble of questions with no answers, but her emotions were leaving her feeling numb. She wiped her cheeks of the offensive tears, and went to Aro's desk. She opened the bottom drawer, and emptied it of the money that Aro kept for emergencies where cash was needed. If she had forgotten anything, she would just buy what she needed. She looked around at the rooms she had spent so much time with the vampire...the man, she loved. He had taken her from her human life and given her a wonderful gift. They may not always have agreed, but there was the connection that kept them happy. They had jointly worked to bring the covens together and defeat Sulpicia. Charlotte cursed that one to hell for her revelation that upended her happiness with Aro and threatened to destroy everything they had achieved.
