Chapter four: History lesson
—————————————————————Emily was getting ready to take a nap while Mr. Tanner introduced the lesson for the week. She already read multiple accounts about the battle of willow creek and she didn't have her coffee this morning.
"This battle took place right at the end of the war, in our very own Mystic falls. How many casualties resulted in this battle?" Mr. Tanner asked the class. "Miss Bennett?"
"Um.. a lot." Bonnie replied. Emily hid her laughter for her friends sarcastic answer. "I'm not sure. Like a whole lot." Bonnie continued.
"Cute becomes dumb in an instant, Miss Bennett." Tanner dissented.
Emily turned to Bonnie and mouthed 'A s s h o l e'
"Mr. Donovan! Would you like to take this opportunity to overcome your embedded Jock stereotype?"
"It's okay Mr. Tanner I'm cool with it."
"Hmm, Elena? Surely you can enlighten us about one of the town's 'most significant historical events?'"
"I'm sorry, I... don't know." Elena told him.
"I was willing to be lenient last year for obvious reasons, Elena. But the personal excuses ended with the summer break." Tanner replies, his tone laced with fake disappointment. Everybody knows the grown man just likes to take any opportunity he has to bully his students.
Elenas eyes met her desk and Emily wondered the consequences of punching a teacher in the face in the middle of class.
"There were 346 casualties. Unless you're counting the local civilians." Emily turned to her left so see that Stefan answered the question. She wasn't sure what he meant about 'civilians' and hoped he would elaborate.
"That's correct. Mr..."
"Salvatore." Stefan replied.
"Salvatore, any relation to the original settlers here at mystic falls?"
"Distant."
"Well very good. Except of course there were no civilian casualties in this battle." Mr. Tanner said walking back to his desk.
"Actually, there were 27, sir. Confederate soldiers, they fired on the church believing it to be housing weapons. They were wrong. It was a night of great loss." Stefan corrected. "The founders archives are stored in the Civil hall if you'd like to brush up on your facts, Mr. Tanner."
The whole class didn't bother to hide their smiles now. Emily Gilbert wished she had a photographic memory so she could always project the look on her history teachers face right now whenever she needed.
Emily pulled out her phone and tapped on her sisters contact name.
