Harsh footsteps paced down the uneven sidewalk, unfazed by the small patches of ice from the night's moisture. Satoru Gojo had four minutes to compose himself and get his words together or he would risk an explosive fight he was not prepared for.
Nanami Kento was many things: calm, sweet, kind, thoughtful and so much more patient than Gojo deserved. He unknowingly picked up the shattered pieces of Gojo's heart and put it back together.
His heart raced as he played back the interaction. It was just a phone number. That's it. He was dating the most handsome man he had ever laid eyes on, so it was no surprise that others wanted him too.
"Oh, you're picking this up for Nanami-san? He's so sweet!" Gojo nodded with a proud smile. Nanami really was the kindest person he had ever come across, especially once you slipped past his hard, reserved exterior. Many had tried and failed. He prided himself on the fact that he succeeded. She continued, sliding a small slip of pink paper across the counter. "Um, would you mind passing this along for me please? He hasn't been by in a while so I wasn't able to give it to him myself." She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, a shy smile across her face as she avoided his gaze.
The girl was in love.
With Gojo's perfect boyfriend.
Of course she was.
A tight smile graced his lips, one almost realistic enough to deceive even himself: if only he wasn't acutely aware of the panic that seized every rational thought, pinning them down with terror. He grabbed the note from her delicate fingers, tucking it carefully in his pocket before exiting the bakery with his head down, disgusted by his childish behavior.
He should've been proud that people found his boyfriend attractive. Yet, the green monster stirred doubt in his mind, saddling up for a fight he desperately wanted to avoid. Nanami didn't deserve such childish antics. Nanami was deserving of someone more secure in not only themselves, but also their relationship.
Something Gojo wasn't sure he could give him.
He glanced at his reflection in the windows as he passed, assessing himself for the twentieth time that day, just as he did every day. To anyone who passed, his outward appearance was strong, slightly cocky, and collected with impenetrable confidence. That's why nobody would ever expect the sadness that simmered silently under his unbreakable exterior, plaguing every moment of his existence. Friends came and went. His relationships quickly soured, often being discarded like trash. It was a never ending and constant reminder that his value lied in his skills and strength as a sorcerer. Nobody ever looked at him as a person, just a weapon to be used.
He opened the door to Nanami's flat, the familiar gray-blue walls welcoming him into the only place where the sadness seemed to diminish, surrounded by the scent and comfort of his favorite person.
Nanami sat comfortably in his leather armchair, completely absorbed in a fictional world as he read the words splayed across the pages. Gojo smiled lightly and pressed a soft kiss to the man's forehead. "Hiya handsome. I stopped and got you a treat," he whispered, shaking the bag of goodies.
Nanami stood with a smile, taking Gojo's hand as he led him to the kitchen table. "You woke up early to get me breakfast?" Nanami jokingly questioned, his eyebrow cocked with suspicion as he reached into the brown bag. "And you got my favorites? Now I definitely know you're bribing me," Nanami chuckled, his teeth sinking into the flaky baguette.
Gojo smiled, admiring the sleepy grin of the man before him. He loved the version of Nanami that only he was shown, his shell fully removed in Gojo's presence. He felt so honored to be privy to that kind of comfort.
Gojo shook his hands innocently. "No bribing today. Just wanted to get you a treat since today might be our last day to relax for a while," he sighed, sinking into his chair as his leg found Nanami's.
