CHAPTER FIVE.          Dead In The Water
LAKE MANITOC. Wisconsin
LATE NOVEMBER. 2005

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

THE LYNNWOOD INN IS DOING WELL FOR ITSELF. Dean Winchester sits at a table, scanning through the obituaries that have possible leads for a case. A waitress walks over, picking up the multiple empty plates. She's dressed in a tight and revealing outfit, a tank top, and a freakishly short shorts. She was gorgeous. "Can I get you anything else?" She asks with a flirty smile. Dean looks up and grins around the pen he's chewing on. He goes to say something, but someone else beats him to it.

"Dean!"

Little feet are followed by the little voice. The woman's flirty smile falls as she watches a small child come running over, wrapping her arms around Dean's body. Dean is caught off guard, grabbing her with one arm as he looks over at the blond woman with an awkward grimace.

Sam and Sloane walk over from the bathrooms, sitting in their seats. "Just the check, please." Sam says. Sloane snickers, wearing a black t-shirt and jeans.

The waitress awkwardly smiles. "Okay." She chirps as she turns away.

Dean drops his head, then looks at Sam. "You know, Sam, we are allowed to have fun once in a while." Dean points to the waitress walking away. "That's fun."

Sam doesn't reply, looking away. He was thinking about Jess. Sloane grabs Kennedy, pulling her onto her lap. "Sorry, Dean, no pretty girls named fun for you so long as Ken's here," Sloane pointed out, taking a sip of her water.

Kennedy looks over, "Where's mine?" She blurted. Sam reached over, sliding Kennedy's chocolate milk in the girl's direction.

"Here, take a look at this, I think I got one." Dean hands Sam the newspaper. Sloane cranes her neck, listening. "Lake Manitoc, Wisconsin. Last week Sophie Carlton, eighteen, walks into the lake, and doesn't walk out. Authorities dragged the water; nothing." Sam slides the article Sloane's way. She bounces the four-year-old on her knee, looking at the printed picture in thought. "Sophie Carlton is the third Lake Manitoc drowning this year. None of the other bodies were found either. They had a funeral two days ago."

Sam looked over in confusion. "A funeral?"

"Yeah, it's weird, they buried an empty coffin. For, uh, closure or whatever."

"Closure?" Sam scoffed. Sloane looked at him questioningly. "What closure? People don't just disappear, Dean. Other people just stop looking for them."

Dean looked over, raising a brow. "Something you want to say to me?"

"The trail for Dad. It's getting colder every day."
