*Lance*

I was driving as if the devil himself was after me. Or rather, as if I were the devil himself.

I had heard him and her, how panicked she was, then there had been a bang and I had heard nothing. No more response.

I had immediately sent the police and an ambulance to her. I had to make sure she was okay. Because I swore if that fucker had touched a hair on her head, he wouldn't just go to jail. Nobody touched her while I was around.

She was mine.

When I reached her apartment, the police were already there.

Everything stopped in my head, I just wanted to get to her. I wanted to protect her. What I should have been doing all along. But they wouldn't even let me near the house. A young police officer pushed me back "You can't go in there." he said, his voice shaking.

"My girlfriend is in there," I tried to push past him, but he held me.

"I'm sure your girlfriend is fine. But we have a hostage situation there and I can't let anyone through."

"A hostage situation?" my eyebrows shot up along with my pulse.

"Yes. Some psychopath has a woman in his power and is threatening to kill her. Colleagues are negotiating up there right now."

"That's my girlfriend.", my breathing felt all weird with one beat.

I wanted to rip the mask off my face to take a proper breath, but I had already drawn too many stares. It was hard for me to catch my breath and keep a clear head. If he did something to Ria... Whom I had called my girlfriend and somehow even meant it that way... Fuck I was way too deep involved in this.

My head started to roll over and with it my thoughts.

I was way too immersed in this. I had gotten way too involved with her. She was becoming more and more of a danger. A weak point. Something that could be used against me and I didn't want anyone to have anything on me. But if someone got too close to her, it would push just the buttons it took to drive me insane. I would do anything to protect her.

It was not good and I had to get away from her very urgently. I had to gain distance again, because the deeper I let her get under my skin, the more difficult it would become. Or was it already too late?

My pulse just shot through the roof and my gaze was firmly fixed on the front entrance. I prayed she got out of there. Unharmed.

My breathing was getting more and more labored. I almost forgot to breathe because my fear paralyzed me. My fear for her.

Fuck. I couldn't even take a step.

Suddenly a window was ripped open upstairs. I heard screaming. I heard Ria and my blood froze in my veins as he held her out the window.

Her upper body was hanging over the precipice.

Like ants, people began to run while she clung to his hand. I heard her panicked voice without hearing what she was saying. Tears were running down my face. If she fell...

She wasn't allowed to...

With a jerk, she reared her body. I could see her head bang against His, the two of them falling out of my field of vision back into the apartment.

Screams. Gunshots. Then silence.

I held my breath. Police officers and paramedics ran into the house.

I didn't move an inch. I just stood there staring at the entrance to the house.

Minutes passed. Hours.
