Following our story of Anne Bonny, it's only fitting to now talk about her close friend in-depth, Mary Read.
Mary Read was a famous 18th century English pirate. Also known as Mark Read, she was known for dressing up as a man, and later being convicted of Piracy is the "Golden Age of Piracy." She was born in England in 1685, and died in 1721 in Jamaica. She was a part of the William crew, alongside Anne Bonny and Captain Calico Jack Rackham. In some accounts, Mary was also noted to stand alongside Anne Bonny against the Tyger, the surprise attack that ended in the crew's first and only mass-capture.

Early Life
Mary Read (also known as Mary Reade) has a more skeptical and unknown early life than her counterpart, Anne Bonny. She was the daughter of Polly Read and half-sister of Alfred Read, who disappeared at sea. In a money scandal with her half-brother's family, Polly tried to pass Mary off as her son, dressing her up as a boy. Even after the money was awarded, Mary continued with her masculine appearance. Disguised as a male, she ended up signing up for the military and joining a military ship crew, dedicated to presenting herself as a man until she married her husband, name unknown but a fellow English soldier.
