It's been two days since I visited Mamie and Husnah. Husnah called this morning to tell me she was coming over today after school. Muhsin has gone to work and I was home alone, even Hajara the maid had gone out to get groceries. The house was eerily quiet. It is times like this that make me wonder how it will be if I had a child. I bet the house would not be as quiet as this and I will have someone to keep me company. I picked up my bag from beside me and took the pill I was given by the last doctor we went to. I took one and lay back on the couch. I've been secretly taking this pill for over a month now with the hope of seeing some changes. Muhsin asked me to stop taking them so it will not cause any damage to me but I've got to try at least for him. I just can't give up.
I was about dosing off when my phone went off. It was Ameerah my best friend and also Muhsin's cousin. She has in Dubai for the past 2 years.
"our wife that has forgotten me" she said.
"Meerah my love you know I can never forget you. How are you?"
"Hmm! Stories kina tare da habibin ki ba dole ki manta da mu ba" she teased.
I giggled "kedai kika sani. How are you?"

"I am fine. I called to tell you I am back, I arrived this afternoon.so a ajiye mun abun dadi"
"Mashallah" I squealed "I am so excited I can't wait. Make sure you bring all my Abayas and perfumes"
"Inayah the perfume addict I cannot forget your perfumes else you would have my neck"
"Good! I can't wait to see you"
"Me too. I can't wait to be back. I am not so excited to see Aunty though" she said talking about Muhsin's mom. Meerah wasn't her biggest fan. They never liked each other Although she was her uncle's wife. And as for Mama once she found out Meerah was my best friend and the one that connected Muhsin and I, she started acting weirdly towards meerah.
"You would have to live with it"
"And to top it off I will be staying with her until my parents get back" I could sense her rolling her eyes.
I laughed "tough luck"
"Tell me about it. I know she's giving you a hard time. That woman is something else I tell you" she sighed
"Don't worry it will be alright"
"I will see you In the evening"
Since we've been married four years ago, the lack of a child had cast a shadow over our otherwise blissful marriage. Mama couldn't hide her disappointment, and her disapproval had only grown with time. In her eyes, i have failed as a wife. And any one i associated with was automatically disliked by her.
I am grateful Husnah is coming to stay with me and Ameerah is back. I am Hoping that spending time with them will distract me from the constant pressure and judgement I face from my Mother-in-law.
Few hours later, the door chimed and I rushed to answer it. Smiling at the sight of Husnah and Ameerah both standing at the door.
"I am so glad you are here" I hugged Ameerah tightly.
"I wouldn't miss seeing you for the world" Meerah whispered.
"What about me" Husnah whined.
I hugged her also "I am glad you are here too. Hajara will take your things inside" I said to her and called Hajara to take Husnah's bags into the guest room.
We all settled in the living room, our laughter and conversations filled the space. Momentarily pushing aside the thoughts weighing on my mind.
Husnah picked up my bag to pick up the pack of gum I had in there. She mistakenly dropped the bag on the floor and everything fell out. I was quick to pick up my pill but she had already seen it.
"Yaya Inayah I thought we already spoke about this" she said taking the drug from my hands.
"Husnah i can't help it. I just can't sit back and relax. Every day, I feel like I'm drowning in Mama's expectations. She constantly reminds me that I'm failing as a wife"
"But Muhsin already told you not to take this drugs any more. They might cause problems for you Inaya" Ameerah said.
"I know" I cried "I promise not to take it again"
"you are not defined by your ability to have children. You are a loving wife, a caring friend, and a remarkable person. Don't let anyone make you feel otherwise." Ameerah assured me.
I nodded, my eyes welling up with tears. "Thank you, meerah Your words mean the world to me.
I smiled weakly.
"Don't be so hard on yourself yaya"Husnah said holding my hands.

I am grateful for having them in my life. I felt peaceful when they were here. Their presence brought me a sense of relief.
However, our tranquility was short lived.
The sound of Mama's voice cut through their moment of respite as she entered the room, her disapproving gaze fixed on us. "Oh, so you've brought your friend and sister over Inayah. That is all you know how to do Perhaps they can give you some advice on how to fulfill your duties as a wife."
Before I could utter a single world Meerah and husnah stood up
