I can envision that city so clearly
From the lush shaded streets
To the carbon grey concrete
And the house that we visited
Its small creaking white gate
Opening to a flowery array
The orchids pots leading to distorted garage
And to the right, a thriving garden
Where the bees and butterflies bustled over the roses
The tall pine tree rustled as the wind blew in
And at night, the katydids and crickets chirping
The white meshed door opened with a loud squeak
And then the wind chimes tinkled
Welcoming us to the small inside
The swirling smoke from kitchen
And the sounds of squawking chickens.
The cooing of doves and peacocks
From the backyard
The big backyard shaded by plum trees
And beneath it, hung my precious swing
Kicking the ground, and up in the air
I sang so freely, I sang with no care
The hot summer nights, sleeping on the carpet
The barren misty roads, and mucky fruit market
And I would balance myself
on single bricks on the banks of avenues
getting lost in the winding roads
untidy hair, and unlaced shoes
From the house I could see a small shop
Through the tall grass
I'd make my way there
With a 10 rupee note crumpled in my hands
10 candies, each of different kind
Being chewed in my mouth, as I roamed the house
And getting warmed up to it
I don't know how,
I don't know when
It became home
When the sky was coloured in charcoal
And the rooms began to light up
I could see everything inside, through the windows,
from the garden
Where my father chattered with my uncle
Tapping the spoon on the cup of his evening tea
I should've listened, I should've asked questions
Before he was taken from me
I visited again, times and times again
But it's not same
I thought I loved this city
Because it was shrouded in mystery
And tall dark green trees
And cherry blossom fragrances
And the lonesome labyrinthine streets
The orchids, the swing, the dandelions in the wind
Maybe I just loved it, because it made me feel something
