If I knew I would be spending my Saturday night in the Ash Town police department, listening to yelling, blabbering and complaining all at once, I would have rather accepted eternal boredom and loneliness at my apartment with Nico’s dirty diapers.
With Ivy perched on one side of my hip and Nico on the other, I stared at Daphne trying to threaten a police officer with a law-suit while Brenda and Ivan consoled Amelia, who was still somewhat shaken up by the incident. I would be lying if my blood had not run cold when I received a call from her, in an extremely shaky voice, narrating the events which had happened in the past hour.
Her panicked voice had made me stuff all the children in my car and race from the Petrova residence to the police station, wondering if any of them had gotten hurt. Luckily, the couple was fine physically but mentally neither was having the best time.
“Listen here, officer, I need police protection right fucking now or do you want me to contact your seniors, huh? You know who I am, don't you?” I massaged my temples as I heard Daphne threaten the poor officer for the hundredth time.
I looked up and saw him sigh deeply as he started to respond, “Ma’am, there is protocol we need to file a report and then an application for protection-”
“And what after? You just want me to go home and sit peacefully knowing someone wants to murder my family? You do know this is an attempt to murder, right? Go ahead and open those little law books of yours.” She mocked and I couldn’t help but stare at her blankly and roll my eyes at her sheer stupidity.
"Ma'am we need to move with law, I can't defy the protocols." He replied, flipping through the pages of the register while speaking the details of the car in his walkie-talkie.
I watched Daphne roll her eyes and run a hand through her short hair as she lost her intimidating stance and straightened her posture, voice becoming eerily calm,
"Look here, officer. I am not going to sit around and wait for another attack on me or my family anytime soon. So, you give me police protection right now and we peacefully part ways because trust me, you don’t want it to go my way.”
Daphne’s tone was extremely calm and polite but her intention was nothing but harm. I saw the officer gulp as he raised his finger in protest and just as I heard my friend sigh, I knew she was about to snap.
Dropping both the kids on Brenda and Ivan each, who let out a sound of disapproval, I rushed to Daphne’s side and pulled her back before she could unleash her rage on the officer.
“Would have broken his fucking nose, Ivory. Why did you do that?” She grumbled, face scrunched in anger and concern.
“Daph, I am not letting you physically harm a police officer on duty. Just follow the protocol, it's the law.” I scolded but she just huffed in response.
"The law, Ivy? The law? Mel and I just got shot at and I don't give a flying fuck if the bullet pierced my heart but I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if it even barely grazed her. I don't want to do ‘nothing’ about it." Daphne rambled, her eyes a bit glossy as she looked away, not meeting my eyes.
My gaze softened and I placed my hand on her shoulder, "You're not doing nothing about it, Daph and neither is the police. You gave them the details of the car, they'll catch them as soon as possible and you submit that application, they will give you protection."
Daphne sniffed lightly as she looked up towards her family and then at me, throwing a light-tipped smile my way.
"Go be with them, I'll do the formalities." I told her, jerking my head in Amelia's direction while patting her shoulder.
"Thanks, Ivy." She replied.
I moved towards the desk where the officer stood and apologised on Daphne's behalf as I started to file the report. My gaze travelled to my side where Daphne had now moved towards her family, greeting all her kids and Nico with a kiss on the forehead and hugging Amelia like her life depended on it while Ivan cringed at the sight.
Signing one last paper, I thanked the officer and returned to Daphne and the others. Brenda seemed half-asleep, Ivan was on his phone and Nico seemed to be in some sort of argument with Ivy in baby language.
Amelia’s head rested on Daphne’s shoulder, deep snores rumbling from her chest while the latter’s head rested on her’s, hands interlocked with the former and deep in slumber. I smiled at the group in front of me, a sense of calmness and serenity washing over me at the sight. No matter how stressful and hectic the night had been, I was glad to see Daphne and Amelia get their well deserved rest.
I started to get the kids in mine and Daphne’s car, getting ready to leave the station. Just as I moved to wake the couple up, my phone rang loudly in my pocket. I winced as Daphne flinched and shot up while Amelia simply mumbled something incoherently and snuggled deeper into her wife’s side.
Daphne shot me a glare while I flashed her a sheepish smile, fumbling with the phone to pick it up. My eyebrows scrunched in confusion as my eyes read the name flashing on the screen, ‘Bridget Ash Field’.
I thought about what might have been the issue for her to call me at such an odd time, though civil, I didn’t expect her to contact me after what had happened in our senior year. Besides, her and Daphne hadn’t always been on the best terms for her to talk to me. Putting all of that aside, I answered the call and raised the receiver to my ear. But before I could even utter a greeting, I heard a completely unexpected and urgent voice ring out in my ears, alarming me instantly.
“I need a favour.”
