Thunder cackled and lightning flashed in front of my eyes as rain poured down heavily on the grounds of Ash Town.
My foot pushed on the accelerator as I drove towards the police station in the hope to reach as fast as I could. I wanted this situation to end as soon as possible, knowing how delicate the matter was. I had already received several emails from my office to cover this story but I had nonchalantly ignored them, knowing Daphne's innocence was a more pressing matter at that time.
Ivory was in the backseat, resting for a while as she had been tired and hurting from all the fatigue. I didn't mind her taking a nap, knowing she needed the rest to recover properly.
My head pounded in exhaustion but the gears of my brain still ran at full speed, trying to assess the situation and make some sense of it. I was also mentally preparing arguments and rebuttals of the responses of these arguments to offer to Richard and his team in Daphne's defence.
The attack on her which took place a few days ago was the biggest line of defence we had in her favour. My train of thought was interrupted when the blue and red lights of police vans flashed in my eyes and an indistinct chatter reached my ears.
A huge crowd of reporters, journalists and police officers was swarming near the entrance of the police station. The moonlight reflected off the glass windows of the building, illuminated the horde of people, giving me a clear picture of the situation in front of me as the rain poured down.
I craned my neck to get a better look and try to discover what the fuss is about. I parked my car on the side of the road and nudged Ivory awake. She woke up with a start, "What?" She mumbled, still in daze from sleep.
"There's a huge crowd in front, I can't take my car in there. I'll try to see what the situation is. Stay in the car, keep your phone close and be alert." I said slowly as if I was talking to a baby and she nodded slowly.
I got out of the car with my ID card gripped tightly in my hand as I locked the vehicle behind me and paced towards the swarm of people trying not to get too wet. I entered the crowd and shoved my way through it to the front. I tried to make my way past the barricade to be stopped by a police officer.
"No media personnel allowed past this point, ma'am." He said, his speech muffled as raindrops trickled down his face.
"What's going on?" I shouted over the noise of the thunder rumbling above me.
"Ma'am, I have been given orders not to disclose information-"
"Hey, Wilson! Let this one in." I looked past the officer and saw Leo standing at a distance, his raven curls sitting in a damp state on his head and skin wet with the downcoming pour.
Wilson sighed as he slightly opened the barricade and I rushed in with my hand over my head towards Leo. He led me inside the police station and I saw the atmosphere there was even more chaotic than the one outside, several officers urgently made calls and others received the incoming ones, the sound of rustling of papers, the ringing of phones and order being shouted across the distance of the station.
"What exactly is happening here?" I asked slowly as I kept following Leo towards the Chief's office. He ruffled his hair, trying to get water out of it as he replied, "Your friend managed to pull an 'el chapo' out of our most secure cell." He said and I detected a tinge of pride in his tone but I brushed it off as my jaw dropped in bewilderment and I stopped in my tracks.
"'El chapo'?" I echoed.
"She ran away." HIs tone became bitter and official again as he opened the door to the chief's entrance and I saw Richard talking to a man with neat blond hair, square-rimmed glasses and a tall figure.
