The thoughts of becoming an adult next day had chased away the sleepiness he had earlier in the day. The hope of getting the freedom he yearned for was circling inside his head. He could finally do whatever he wants without any restrictions from his mother. While thinking about this, he didn't realize when he had fallen asleep.

He woke up in the morning with the help of his alarm clock.
On 4th March, Solis Maxane, an ordinary guy in New York City, turned 18.
He freshened up and threw on his uniform to go to his school leaving his room messy as usual.

"Happy birthday, Solis! " His mom, Isabella Maxane, startled him with a hug.
"Thanks mom! What's that smell? " he sniffed the air.
She was preparing a feast for him and baked a chocolate cake for the occasion.
He said, "Mom, you didn't have to do all this for me, but thank you. Can I invite my friends over tonight? "
She said, "Of course you can, my dear. It's not everyday my son gets to turn 18."
"If only dad was here, " he sighed.
After his dad disappeared when he was still a toddler, his mom had been raising him alone and became overprotective.

After having bacon and eggs for breakfast, he left the house and was waiting for his neighbor and best friend, Aneya, a down to earth and passionate girl, to show up so that they could go to school together as always.
"She always makes me late, " he grunted.
While he was checking the time on his watch, someone had jumped on him from the side.
"Happy birthday bestie!!!" She was choking him with a soul crushing hug.
"Let me breathe, shorty!! " Due to her head only reaching his shoulders, that nickname was inevitable.
"Look what I got for you! And mom also packed biryani for you, your favorite! " screamed Aneya.
After opening the box she gave him, he was shocked, but a second later he smiled. The box had custom made pins and other merchandise of his favorite music band.
"Thank you! I always wanted these. "
"Now let's go before we get more late"
They fortunately reached the school before the bell rang.
Solis was crushed in another group hug as he met the rest of his friends. They all were in the same grade.
Nicole, the group nerd said, "Sol, wanna guess what we got you?"
" We are gonna get scolded if we don't get to class soon guys! ," said Sara, the hotheaded girl of their group.
"He will love the present, " said Jake, the social butterfly.
With visible excitement, Edward said, "Why wouldn't he? It's the best pet anyone - "
"Shut up, Edward!" Sara had smacked him on the back.
"Calm down everyone, let's go to class first. " said Solis.
They all had pitched in to give him wanted he wanted the most.
"My dad and sister will bring your gift when school ends, Sol. " said Aneya.
"Oh that reminds me, you guys should come to my house tonight. Mom is making a grand feast for everyone," said Solis.
"Then we will bring your present with us at that time, " said Jack.
" I can't wait to eat the food though, " Edward smiled.

In the afternoon , when school was over, they all went to their home to get ready to come at Solis'  place. On the way back Solis kept nagging Aneya to tell what the present was despite getting a hint from Edward.
"Just tell me, shorty, I won't tell anyone" said Solis.
"Just wait for a couple of hours, Sol," she said.
"But I am your friend, tell me... " Sol requested.
Ignoring his requests, Aneya bade goodbye to him and Sol entered his house.

"How was your day, dear? " asked his mom.
"It was great, they will come tonight" replied Solis.

In the evening, his friends started arriving. At last entered Aneya and her sister Alora, who was two years younger, with a cute little golden retriever puppy wagging it's tail happily.

They screamed "SURPRISE! ". Tears of joy nearly came out of Solis'    eyes when he saw the fluffball.
" He is so cute! I love him! " yelled Solis with happiness while carrying it in his arms.
"Is it a boy? Oh yeah. Who's a good boy? You are! I will name you 'Shine' as your fur shines like gold" he said.
Alora also gave him some flowers for the occasion which his mom put in a vase.
They all started playing with Shine as Isabella finished decorating the dining table with food.
They all ate their fill, Edward eating the most despite Jake warning him that he will feel unwell later.

After eating, Solis and his friends, and also Alora went to his bedroom. They were gossiping about what happened in their school today.
"No wonder Estaban and Dorothy broke up, their chemistry was so weird, " said Sara.
"They could have fought later, I couldn't focus on reading my book, " sighed Nicole.
"And I noticed Courtney staring at you more than usual today, Sol," added Aneya while laughing.
"I just don't get why she won't listen to me. I have rejected her multiple times, I don't even like girls" said Solis.
"How's your crush doing by the way? What was his name again...ah... Arthur, right? " asked Jake.
"Yeah, probably doesn't know I exist," Solis laughed sadly.
"Maybe you should flirt with him more often, so that he could get a hint. He is as dense as a rock, " said Edward.
Alora was listening to them talk while rubbing Shine's belly and occasionally giving him kisses.

Followed with a knock, Solis' mom entered the room carrying a ornate box made from the finest wood.
She said, "This was your grandmother's prized possession, Solis. In her deathbed she left this to you in her will. She also said that you should be the first one to open it and on your 18th birthday."
Solis took the box from her hand and placed it on his bed. Though it looked heavy it was surprisingly light.
Aneya said, " Mrs. Maxane, wasn't his grandmother the one who suggested his name? "
Isabella said, "Yes Aneya. I don't know how but she told me that I would give birth to a boy and his name must be Solis."
"Pretty ancient name if you ask me," added Sara. The whole room burst into laughter and giggles while Isabella looked like she was thinking about her mom's memories. She took her leave and said, "It's okay, open the box without me. I will come back later. "
However Solis was excited to see what was inside. At first he was struggling to open the lid, but then it sprang open with a creak.
Everyone gathered around Solis to see.

They were shocked to witness what was inside and totally unaware of how their lives would change from then on.
