Part 1:

"Let me tell you a story, about a girl and a boy. He fell in love with his best friend, when she’s around he feels nothing but joy. But she was already broken, and it made her blind, and she could never believe that love would ever treat her right. Did you know that I loved you, or were you not aware? You’re the smile on my face, and I ain’t going nowher-"

"Sutton, you better get going!" My mom calls from the kitchen, interrupting my music. Darn you, mom. I was jamming out to Justin Bieber.

"Yeah, I’m just leaving!" I call back, as I turn off Justin Bieber. I look in the mirror one last time and run my fingers through my hair. I look hot. Kidding, I look like I always do. Pretty simple. I have long dirty blonde hair, and it’s one of the only things that I like about my appearance. I have darker skin, and hazel eyes. I'm fairly tall, just like my mom.

It’s the first day of summer vacation, and also my first day of work at Mary's Market. I’ve heard that Jake, a hot popular junior from my school is going to be working there too. I grab my bag and walk to the kitchen. "Bye mom!" I say, and head out the door. I live in a small town called Lake Cowichan, and I can walk to practically anywhere. There's only one high school, so I know most of the kids that live here. I love living in a small town where everyone knows everybody, and there isn’t always a lot of people wandering about.

When I get to the market, I’m not nervous at all. Mary is an old family friend, and I’ve babysat all of her grandchildren. I spot her in the back corner of the market and walk over to her.

"Hello Sutton," she says to me, happily.

"Hi Mary," I say and give her a big smile.

"I’ve got another person about your age starting today too, so we'll wait until he shows up to start the orientation," she explains to me, as she continues to restock the watermelon display. Ah! I bet she’s talking about Jake. I can’t wait to see him. And work with him. And stare at him. And flirt with him. "Fill these out while we're waiting," Mary says, handing me some forms. I guess I got here early after all. I go over to a table outside and start filling them out. It’s just contact information about me.

I’m actually glad that I’m working on my first day of summer holidays because I need to distract myself from things. I don’t want to think about him. Trevor. Ugh. We dated for a couple of months, and I thought I loved him. He changed my life, and made me really happy, and then one day out of nowhere he dumped me. Just like that. I see him every once in a while and he just smiles at me before I turn around and run. I hope he doesn’t see how much pain I’m in when he looks at me.

            "Sutton?" I hear.

"Oh!" I say, when I realize that Mary is standing right in front of me. I see that to her left is a super cute guy that I’ve never seen before.

"This is Zack, he is the other employee starting today," Mary says as he looks at him. Well, he’s not Jake but he’s super cute. I could spend a whole summer with him.

"We have another boy starting tomorrow too," she continues. Oh gosh, I hope it’s Jake. For the next hour, Mary teaches Zack and I how to restock shelves, work at the till, and made sure we were clear about the rules of the job. Once she was done, she asked us to start restocking some of the selves together. When we got started on that, I decided to start talking to him.

"I haven't ever seen you around before, are you new here?" I ask. He looked kind of shocked that I was talking to him.

"Uh, yeah. I just moved here from uh... Ontario," he responds.
