Part 1: Boyfriend's Brother

It's funny. When you're seventeen and have been with one person all your life, you can't imagine being with anyone else. You met him at 5, had your first kiss at 6, shared a birthday party at 8, had your first sleepover at 10, school disco at 11, first date at 13, started the same high school at 14, and lost your virginity to him at 16. Why wouldn't you stay with him forever? After all, you were to yourselves and everyone who saw you two grow up, childhood sweethearts.

Dan and I were proper sweethearts. As soon as we met as little kids we clicked and walked around the whole neighbourhood announcing we were going to get married one day. It was all a innocent joke, but over 10 years down the line, nothing has changed and we still walked around the neighbourhood, holding hands, just that these days, we get asked when the wedding is. We laugh it off, knowing we are way too young to think that far ahead, even though I knew that I couldn't imagine my life without him.

However, I didn't realise how one dinner party and an unexpected guest could flip my life upside down.

6 p.m.

"Abbie are you ready?" My mum shouted from the bottom of the stairs.

"Coming." I muttered, readjusting my dress around my hips, before running downstairs.

"Just go to the car while I lock up. Your dad and Holly are already waiting." My mum sighed, as she practically pushed me out of the front door and onto the porch.

"Am I gonna be like you?" Holly asked as I did up my seatbelt.

"Hopefully not." My dad muttered.

I rolled my eyes. "Waiting two minutes won't kill you guys."

"Can we just go?" My mum asked as she got in. "We're late."

"Soon everyone will stop inviting us." My dad joked.

"Don't worry." I told him. "As long as Dan and I are together you're safe on this one."

"It's been a while since we've gotten together." My mum said. "This is going to be nice."

"You look beautiful." Dan whispered in my ear at the table.

"Thank you." I smiled. I knew Dan liked it when I dressed simply, so I wore a black skater dress with a white floral pattern and a pair of black lace up leather boots with a stacked heel.

"So how did you enjoy your last day of freedom Abbie?" Mary, Dan's mum asked me.

"Very well. I slept." I laughed.

"I should have known." She joined in on the laugh.

"What about you Dan?" My mum asked.

"I wasn't as lucky." He chuckled. "Training at 7 and then gym."

"How's the football going?" My dad asked.

Dan grinned proudly. "Really good actually. Thanks."

"How are you guys going to deal with college?" Mary asked.

Dan and I exchanged a look. "We'd love to go to the same one, but obviously if Dan gets a better offer somewhere else then I'll take a step back so that he can pursue his career." I told her.

"Our son really couldn't have gotten any luckier." Derek, Dan's dad told my parents.

"I can't disagree." Dan smiled, kissing my cheek.

I know what you're thinking, my life was pretty cliché and I can't disagree. But that's how I liked it. I loved having a jock boyfriend, who I loved and trusted and have known all my life. I loved being close with his family to a point where his parents treated my like their own daughter. It made me feel comfortable and safe. It was perfect. My life was pretty much perfect. Little did I know, that would change as soon as I heard Dan's front door open and footsteps enter the dining room. "Sorry I'm late."

Automatically, my head snapped up curious to see who it was, and regretted it almost immediately.

"Caleb is that you?" My mum exclaimed, getting up.

He laughed, giving my mum a hug. "Hi Karen." He then walked around the table and shook my dads hand. "Paul."

"How have you been?" My dad asked.

"Not too bad I guess." Caleb replied, taking a seat opposite me at the table.

"Caleb got back this morning." Mary told my mum. "He's back for the year before he goes off to college."

"That's fantastic." My mum grinned. "Is he going back to Lakemount High?"

Mary nodded. "It was the easier option."

I saw my mum turn to me with an excited smile on my face. "Abbie hear that? Caleb is gonna be going to the same school."

"Fab." I muttered, turning to look at him.

Caleb was Dan's unidentical twin brother. He was taller, darker, musclier, and a complete asshole. We never had a good relationship ever since he cut my hair off when we were 8 and pushed me off a tree at 11, resulting in a broken arm. As you can guess, I wasn't exactly crying goodbye when he left for a private sports school 2 years ago.

See, Caleb and Dan were very similar hobby wise. They were both very much into sports. The only difference was, while Dan was the typical traditional football jock, Caleb was much more extreme, literally. His talents were made up of off-road motorbike racing, skiing, snowboarding, and I'm pretty sure there were more but I just didn't care. Over the two years he had visited regularly but I decided to avoid him every time and was doing great, until now.

"Pleasant as always." Caleb smirked, leaning back in his chair. "No change there."

"Babe, can we go for a walk?" Dan asked.

"Of course." We both excused ourselves and left the house. "Why didn't you tell me?" I finally asked.

Dan sighed. "I didn't even know he was coming. My mum thought it would be a great surprise."

"I love your mum, you know that." I told him. "But how has she not realised that her two sons barely speak and avoid each other at every step possible?"

There was no particular reason for which Dan and Caleb didn't get along. They just didn't. Ever since I can remember they would argue and fight over the stupidest of things. They never got along. They were too different.

Dan shrugged. "I think she has but she's trying to ignore it."

"What now?" I asked.

"I wish I knew."

Dan always knew what to do. Always. And if he didn't, it never ended well.
