"No."
"But—"
"No."
"Do you always get your own way?"
"No," I said through gritted teeth as Ella fought again to get out of my arms to dance. I wasn't sure I could handle it if she started dancing. "I don't. If I always got my own way then you would not touch him. You would not smile at him. You would not look at him. Fuck. I don't want you to even think about him."
She huffed angrily as we approached my car parked by the beach. She was silent for a moment before asking, "Are you going to murder me, Lurch?"
Rolling my eyes, I shook my head. "I will not kill you, Medusa."
"You promise?"
"I promise," I said, but then quietly added, "Might kill Chad though," under my breath. She didn't seem to hear that which is probably for the better anyway. The thought of Chad harming her returned my brain to the confrontation at the door. "What did Chad say to you?"
"Chad?" She asked before laughing. "Do you mean Chase?"
I don't care.
"You said you were sorry you were not much use to him. What did he say to you?" I asked, trying to keep her on the topic since she seemed easily distracted.
"It was nothing serious. He was just showing off in front of his friends."
"At your expense."
"I handled it."
Unlocking my truck, I pulled the passenger door open before carefully depositing her on the seat being mindful of her head. Reaching over her, I pulled the seatbelt across her body to fasten it, trying to keep my eyes off her chest area where the seatbelt cut right across her top. She shivered.
Pulling my leather jacket off, I covered her chest with it to both keep her warm and preserve her modesty. Her fingers curled over the edges of the jacket that was about seven times her size, and she pulled it up to her chin. I can't help but grin when she sniffed the collar and relaxed into it.
Does she like how I smell?
Closing the door only after ensuring all arms, legs, hands, and feet are inside the vehicle, and that her hair is not caught on the seatbelt by the door, I circle the front of my truck to enter the driver's side.
"I could walk home. You should go back and enjoy the party," she said, yawning.
Turning the ignition on, I turned to look at her. Her eyes were comically wide as she leaned in close to listen. "I only came for you," I said, turning straight again. Her lips quirked as though she thought I was making a joke. I could never joke about such a thing.
"You are dragging me away from a perfectly good party. You are such a party pooper, Ponyboy."
"Ponyboy?"
"From The Outsiders," she said, nodding enthusiastically. She dipped her head to breathe in the lapel of my jacket. "You look like you should be in some sort of gang like The Greasers. A motorbike gang specifically."
"Only you would make book references while you are drunk."
"Where is your motorbike?" she asked, looking around the dashboard as though it was somehow hidden in plain sight and stuffed into the front of my truck. Snorting at the ridiculousness of it, my fingers clench around the wheel. "When am I going to get to ride it?"
"When you are sober."
Ella fell silent. Turning my signal on to leave my parking stall (I drove slowly, literally slower than Chad's mental processing) I quickly took notice that Medusa's eyes were on me. I could feel the trail her eyes left.
