"Come off it, Luce. You know I'd die for you..."
The words echoed through my skull like we were standing in a cave.
"You know I'd die for you."
He almost had. Many, many times. So many times that could've been prevented. So many times that if I had just stopped being so stubborn I wouldn't have needed him to almost die for me.
How could I be so selfish?
I stared down at the grass piled beneath my feet, rain slowly turning the slightly damp dirt into runny mud and clay. It caked the bottom of my boots. I turned my foot back and forth to distract myself. I had to or I would cry and I am far too tired to do such a thing.
"You know I'd die for you."
I hated that. I hated that he was always so sweet with his words. They felt like the warm, golden sun on a cold day, tasted like honey and syrup. I felt so calm and safe when he said things like that. George said he felt the same, but wouldn't let Lockwood know.
I played with the necklace he gave me. It was a gorgeous sapphire that I never took off. He used to say it complimented my eyes, but I think he was only saying that. George says it's just too blue for my complexion. I love feeling the smooth cuts of the precious stone. They're so jagged yet perfected to not harm. It was a comfort I've needed as of late. The last few days have all gone by all too fast, and all too slow at the same time.
It was only now that I finally allowed myself to go through what had happened. First there was a Type One, only a wisp, so to speak. Once we had contained the one, the horrible monstrosity arose from the same Source. How, we weren't sure. George did plenty of research before we went and he still isn't sure how it happened. We had only brought filings, nothing to handle anything bigger than a wisp. Lockwood pushed me away as it lunged and...
