I'm just the side character. I'm the one that is in the back of the class, studiously taking notes. I'm the one that the main character walks by. Of course I'm jealous of not being popular or having the world revolve around me but at least I can see the flaw in the mind trap.
I'm simply a kid, hiding in the bathroom, writing excessively and endlessly about what happens outside of this room. Hi, my name is Benjamin but I go by Benji. If I'm honest, it's weird to write a diary like this but I need something to hold my thoughts.
Today a student jumped into the vortex. He was the first one to do so. He had long blonde hair, bushy eyebrows, and soft brown eyes. His limbs were protected by pads while bandaids stuck variously on his body. One on his cheek, a couple on his hands and forearms and a giant bandage over his knee. He had dropped his skateboard and wandered aimlessly toward the vortex. His eyes were no longer a soft brown but a cloudy gray that covered his iris and pupil. He wasn't himself, he was usually loud and cracking jokes but for the first time ever, he was silent.
Without a thought behind his eyes, I watched him dive into the vortex and just like a blender, human body parts flung around the room from the inside of the spinning helix. It was blood first, then the horrendous screams from the boy that was closely followed by the sounds of tearing flesh, almost like paper being ripped in half and then crumpled up. Bones followed, a broken jaw bone and then a bone from what I assumed was his forearm. Lastly, the smallest tuft of hair floated out of the vortex.
The fellow students around me began shrieking and pointing at the vortex, tears streaming out of their eyes. But the most traumatized was Hiro, who watched his friend get killed in front of him. Hiro's eyes filled with tears but he quickly shook his head and started pushing people out of the hallway, calming them down and trying his best to remain stable.
As for myself, I hid behind the wall. I was intrigued by this strange phenomenon. I sat down after everyone left and began sketching the vortex. Time passed and I looked up once more, I saw Hiro standing at the vortex. He had a furrowed brow, contemplating something I could only imagine was, "This thing took my friend."
Hiro then decided to jump in for himself. Like he saw something or... someone in the vortex. I remember just standing there, peering behind the dormitory hallway, unable to call his name or make him stop. Shockingly, there was no blood. There were no screams, it was silent.
Once Hiro was gone, I was able to move freely again. I wandered to the vortex and reached out to touch it. As my fingertips drew closer to the spinning helix, I felt something bite at my fingers, it wasn't a monster or a creature, it was cold. It felt almost like touching a hot pan and then putting ice over the swelling blister. I remember pulling my hand back and looking around. No one else was there.
