Chapter 5 - Sense Of Hope

Sarah. That was the girl's name. After she showed up Pete took her to his office and he started questioning her. I was with him to make sure she didn't try anything which she didn't as I kind of expected. She had told us everything that had happened after we escaped the place, which was why she was here.

"I knew after she said that her dad told her to kill Dani that she would do anything he told her to do. He never really liked how I changed his plans so at that moment I just assumed that he would eventually tell her to "take care" of me too" She paused and bit her lip. She crossed her arms and began tapping her foot against the wood floor, "But... e-even if she wasn't doing it for him she... she can't just..." She frowned.

Pete's gaze softened and he put his hand on her knee, "I get it, kid, you loved her and you feel betrayed by what she did, but she's dangerous " Pete said softly.

Sarah looked at me and then sighed, "Can I tell you something about Lilith, Luna?" She asked. I nodded and sat down next to Pete on his couch.

"Lilith would've never been like this if it wasn't for her dad. I'm not talking about the way he raised her though, " she paused and took a deep breath before continuing, " 9 years ago, Neil showed up with her and she was unconscious. I tried to ask about her, but they didn't tell me anything about her. Next thing I know she's just living with us like nothing happened, like she was there the whole time. I overheard Neil one day and..." she stopped.

"And?" Pete said raising his eyebrow.

She furrowed her brow at her and reached into her pocket. She pulled an empty test tube that had a tiny drip of some kind of yellow liquid, "This is S.R.E, he made it. I heard him mention how he gave it to a guy named Mully because the guy was afraid of Lilith destroying his town even though she was a goddamn kid," She said.

No... that can't be... no. I felt a cold chill go down my spine. Why would my dad do that? He liked Lilith it makes no sense. "Anyway the S.R.E is almost like a reset button. Whatever she knew before the thing went off, families, and friends, were all gone. I saw him showing her pictures of who I assumed that Mully guy was along with his daughter to see if she could remember them but after a few weeks of doing that she never remembered anybody." she explained.

But how? Even if this is true I watched him give it to her and nothing... wait, "D-Do you know what happens after? Like after they take it?" I stuttered.

"It doesn't go off immediately, but it sends you into shock. The only way it could go off is if he were to push a small button that comes with it. It's the reason why he only made one instead of multiple because the button is connected to a tube and I don't know how it works, but once it turns green and starts bubbling then the person will be gone for a while." she explained.

"What do you mean gone?" Pete asked.

"They'll appear dead." I finished before she got the chance to. They both looked at me and started asking me questions, but I wasn't listening to them. Lilith... I thought it was my fault you died, but it was my dad's fault. He killed my best friend, but for what? Why would he do that?

...No... I can't deny the truth. It wasn't his fault. It's still my fault. I'm the one who pushed the button. I'm the one who... started this. She would've never... I took a long deep breath, but for some reason, it felt like I was getting no air. I felt Pete tap my knee and I turned to stare at him, "Are you alright Luna?" he asked.

I didn't say anything. I couldn't say anything. I just kept breathing even though breathing was hard. I quickly got up from my seat and began walking to the door, "I-I need air" I barely managed to mutter before leaving the building and walking over to the cabins.
