"I do think families are the most beautiful things in the world!"
***
This one's a classic, and a must-read for every girl, at least.
There are basically four books written by Alcott in continuity, Little Women, Good Wives, Little Men and Jo's Boys. Of those, the common version of Little Women comprises of the first two books. The third and fourth ones are great as well, however the classic Little Women hits different.
It's about the four sisters of the March family, caring, motherly but oftentimes vain Meg, tomboyish, fierce Jo, kindly quiet Beth and pretty, ambitious Amy. And we cannot forget Marmee, their mother, and Laurie, the boy next door who becomes Jo's best friend and practically part of their family.
Their father is at war in the beginning of the story on Christmas eve. The Marches, despite being on the poor side, decide to give up their Christmas dinner to a poorer family that can't afford simple meals. The story continues in much a similar simple manner; it's a tale of human kindness, of family, of friendship and love. They grow up from girls to women, marry and have their own families. Good wives ends on a beautiful note on harvest day.
Jo, in particular, is an unforgettable character, one of the female icons of classic English literature. Alcott says the story was based on her own family, and she channelled herself through her Jo. Loyal and brave, smart and funny, unconventional Jo, who hates dressing up, whistles and jumps about and wishes to become a writer, is different and revolutionary for the time she was written in.
And the story exudes wholesomeness and warmth. The warmth of family.
I've read the book umpteen times, and I'd strongly advice all to read this. It's for all ages. If you read it today, you'd probably still be reading it at forty. My mother still does. I'm sure I will, too.
And now I want to go and re-read it right now again🙃
