Sierra gotten out a Sunforge knife and took perfect aim into the wolves' hearts. But the five wolves were unaffected by it. They were smoky, incorporeal shadows, and the blades didn't touch them. One of the wolves turned its head and bit down on Sierra's left shoulder, making her yell out in pain. The bite sizzled, leaving a deep scar over her left upper arm and a fierce glare from Sierra.
The wolves were growling with their heads down. They stamped their feet on the ground, preparing to make the final charge towards the two kids.
Before the two of them were about to accept their fates by fighting back against the shadow wolves and the dark mage, they heard someone yelled, "Aspiro!" A powerful, swirling whoosh of air emerged from out of nowhere and enveloped the smoky predators. In a matter of seconds, the wolves had disappeared into thin air. Callum and Sierra both looked over their shoulders to see someone heading towards their direction, while the dark mage looked more furious than before.
"It's not nice to interrupt," snarled the dark mage.
"And it's not nice to use dark magic either." The two kids were amazed to see a Skywing elf have came to their rescue and walked towards them from the shadowy alleyway behind them. He has short and undercut, light periwinkle blue hair and warm light blue eyes. He has unique dark indigo-gray skin and has various white markings stretched along his face, and runic style ones on his arms. He has two curved horns on both sides of his head, fading from dark to light. He's wearing some type of elven armor, with a jutting neckpiece and a long skirt, along with baggy pants metal boots. He's also walking with a staff with metal plates resembling wings surrounding a glowing blue stone. "Especially on two innocent kids."
"Yes, tell me if there is fair?" said the dark mage. "You have magic within you. What about us?"
"You know very well that people managed to create their primal stones," the elf said. "You do not need to use dark magic."
"Ah yes, the gift of unicorns to humans," replied the dark mage. "I know about and I can see that you are carrying it as well. But I think it's fair, don't you think?"
The elf and the two kids didn't notice as the dark mage reached into his satchel and pulled out some green powder. The dark mage threw it at the elf, but he managed to swiftly dodge it. Unfortunately, the elf has accidentally dropped his staff. A magical fire erupted in the place where the powder fell. The elf quickly casted a spell and lightning flew towards the dark mage. However, the dark mage pulled another item from his bag and blocked them from the fight.
As Callum and Sierra watched from the shadows, they both knew they should help somehow. Callum spotted the elf's staff on the ground and quickly picked it up before a fire has erupted, briefly cutting them off from the two fighting mages and startling the two kids before it faded quickly as it came. The two kids exchanged knowing looks and were ready for the fight.
Suddenly, the dark mage has cast an extremely strong spell that it struck the elf and sent him tumbling down to the ground. The dark mage stood over the elf, casting his shadow over the collapsed elf.
"Now, you can see what dark magic can do," said the dark mage. "What great power those who use the gift of Aaravos have."
As Callum's fingertips moved, arcs of blue light formed, creating the glowing curves of the ancient, powerful symbol.
"Aspiro!" Callum said.
All at once, the shiny rune disappeared, and Callum blew out a powerful blow of wind from his mouth. He directed the rushing wind towards the dark mage's direction when the dark mage was about to place the finishing blow on the elf. The dark mage has been sent flying off of the elf and hit a wall, losing consciousness.
Sierra gotten a Moon Opal from her pouch and crushed it, she started tracing a shimmering rune shape in the air. As her fingertips moved, arcs of light formed, creating the silvery glowing curves of the ancient, powerful symbol.
"Luvelias." All at once, the shiny rune disappeared and the spell happened. A long eternity passes before the ball of magic in her hand shifts into something refined and recognizable. A whispering bird call emits from the mass of magic and they realizes it's a small moonhawk made in the light of moon magic that sits comfortably in Sierra's hand. The bird screeches and flaps its silvery wings a couple times.
The bird launched off of Sierra's hand and flew away from them to bring reinforcements to handle the knocked out dark mage.
Callum gently picked up the elf's staff and offered his hand to help the elf get up. The elf smiled softly at the boy as he placed his hand onto the boy's offered hand and let the boy helped him up to his feet.
Before any of them could say anything, they saw several human guards and five Sunfire elves coming from the road as they followed the fading moonhawk. They tied the dark mage's wrists and took his satchel.
"Take him to the West," The elf told the guards. The guards nodded, but the dark mage woke up from his knock out. "Dark magic can never surpass the unicorn's gift of primal magic."
The guards took the dark mage away from the alley, and the two kids relaxed and sighed in relief as the dark mage was dragged away from them.
"Here. I think this is yours." Callum offered the staff back to the elf.
"Thank you." The elf smiled at them warmly as he took back his staff. "I'm Ibis."
"I'm Callum." Callum smiled gratefully at the elf.
"And I'm Sierra," said Sierra as she hesitantly stepped towards the elf.
The three of them stepped towards the fire that came from the magical fight from earlier and is still burning from the dark spell.
"How did you do your primal magic?" Ibis asked them. "You're not holding any primal stones." He dumped the stuff from the dark mage's satchel and grimaced at the ingredients.
Callum flinched back with a disgusted expression, while Sierra glared at the ingredients. "Gross."
Ibis started dumping the vials and pouches into the fire. A look of sorrow filled his gaze as he sympathized for the fallen animals, but he remembered the two humans who miraculously have done primal magic without any primal stones. Ibis looked at Callum and Sierra, who seemed to be communicating silently with each other and came to a silent agreement.
"The primal magic has been gifted me by a magical creature," admitted Callum mysteriously. "The creature had found me in my time of need."
Ibis couldn't help, but feel amazed and a little confused by Callum's mysterious words. But he refocused on his task at a hand and continued burning the pouches, which one of it stunk and it made them stepped back from the flames as it burned away into the air.
"I thought dark magic is forbidden," Callum said, looking nervous of the freaky dark mage's supplies.
"It is," agreed Ibis. "But there are some who still practice it in secret."
"You won't catch me dead doing dark magic." Sierra glared angrily at the burning flames as the dark mage's ingredients continued to become roasted by the fire.
"I think you've made your opinion very clear, Sierra." Callum chuckled dryly as he placed an agreeing hand on her shoulder. "Besides, you're not alone on that idea."
Ibis smiled softly at the spunk from the two mage kids. "Don't you two have mentors?"
"Nope," replied Callum.
Ibis couldn't help, but feel sympathetic and impressed towards the two young mages. They both have powerful Sky magic, but they don't have anyone to train them and help them learn more about their magic. He soon went back to his task of burning the dark mage's supplies. He had almost burned everything in the fire, only a scroll stamped with a red wax seal and two leather brown books, which made Ibis become curious about it. He quietly read the golden title, "Magic of the Sky." Ibis flipped through a few pages and saw some Sky spells, making him steal a glance at a curious Callum and a wary Sierra. He and Sierra both watched on with rapt curiosity as Ibis looked through the books.
"Is that book about spells?" Callum asked curiously.
"Yes." Ibis soon took out the scroll and unrolled it. Both Callum and Sierra could see that it was written in a unknown cryptic language, and they are unfamiliar with such a language on the scroll.
"What is it?" asked Sierra, feeling wary of the unknown language written in the scroll.
"It's instructions of how to make a primal stone," Ibis replied.
"Did he succeed in... you know... creating it?" asked Callum.
"No." Ibis rolled the scroll up and put away for safekeeping. "It's a difficult formula to complete. Especially for dark mages, since they refuse to bond with the primal sources."
Ibis started looking through the empty bag, making sure he had gotten rid of the ingredients and threw it into the fire. But he soon looked back at Callum and Sierra, who both looked curious about the situation.
"Here." Ibis surprised them by offering the spell book to Callum. "For your troubles."
"Thank you," said Callum as he carefully took the Sky spell book and placed it in his backpack.
"Yeah, thanks for the help." Sierra smiled at Ibis warmly.
"You're welcome." Ibis smiled at them as he used his magical staff to get some fountain water and splashed it on top of the flames, leaving behind wet ash in its wake.
"We better get going." Callum and Sierra started walking out of the alleyway with Ibis behind them, Ibis's expression softened as he met Callum's gaze. "Bye Ibis and thank you."
"Bye Ibis," added Sierra with a small smile as the three of them parted ways.
"Farewell children." Ibis waved to them as they left and smiled softly at them. "And thank you."
After they returned to the grain line, Callum has received the payment from the grain and they soon rode out of the town. He encouraged Sierra to join him.
"I think we're safe," Callum said at Sierra apologetically. "Sorry for dragging you along, Sierra."
"Don't worry about it. It beats wandering around in the village." Sierra shrugged with a smile.
It isn't long till they have returned to Callum's home. They both exchanged uncertain smiles. But one thing is for certain. They are going to become true primal mages themselves. Their dreams are just beginning.
