Sympathy and empathy are two things that are often confused for one another. Sympathy is feeling pity or sorrow for the misfortune that someone else experiences. Empathy is the ability to understand how a person may be feeling with these hardships and share those same emotions.

A quirk Mia Pierce possessed, that she found very inconvenient, was that she lacked the ability to be sympathetic without the feelings of empathy sneaking through. She felt the pain of those around her and often sought to relieve them of those burdens, this was okay when they were her loved ones. Of course, she would try to help them but it became an issue when the people she felt empathy for, were the ones who'd wronged her.

For example, the vampire that'd cruelly taken away her best friend, instead of killing him Mia moved in with him and became his friend, they still argued and fought frequently but in the end, she knew that she would go out of her way to help Damon. The Salvatore wouldn't admit this to anyone but he would also do the same.

But there was one individual that stumped Mia...Klaus Mikaelson. The hybrid had done the most terrible things to her loved ones which should've only sparked feelings of pure hatred and rage. However, he'd also been dealt a bad hand since the day he was born. The abuse he received from his father and the lies told by his mother were the actions that'd initially caused his heart to harden. Although Mia believed her experiences with abuse weren't as extreme, she empathised with him.

It was this same empathy that plagued her mind for the entire homecoming dance.

"God, this is not what I pictured my first homecoming to be like." Mia remarked as she walked into what was meant to be a high school dance but was now somewhat of a rager. Banners and bleachers were replaced with kegs and ping-pong tables.

The gymnasium at their school had mysteriously flooded which meant that the event was moved to Tyler's house. The Lockwood boy graciously offered up his home, it made the most sense considering it was the only one big enough, however, there was more to this.
