«Do you remember when we felt like the only two alive? Don't let me be one of the people that seek a lost romance. Would you go and do it all over again, given a chance?»
---
Sloane peeked first at Aurora's computer, then at the sofa across from them where Vivianne had been occupied doing typing of her own. They were silent, except for the sounds coming from both computers. She was bored and made sure to let the sentiment known with an exaggerated yawn. Aurora scoffed, and Vivianne glanced over the rim of her glasses before deciding to continue working. Boring. She wondered what Irina and Salma were up to, maybe a party. Or tanning in Saint Tropez. Certainly having more fun than her.
They'd been rather communicative about enjoying those last days in Europe. Wish you were here, Slo, there are so many hot people to make out with, Irina was very explicit in pointing that out.
"I'm bored." She announced. Vivianne, of course, looked at her again.
Her manager seemed unimpressed. "I can think of certain tasks to entertain yourself." Sloane tilted her head, waiting for the solution. "First one: call Max. Second one: sort your packing, please."
Well, yes. She would call Max. Sloane even scheduled it on her calendar — man up and call the possible(?) cheater — but that didn't mean she wouldn't buy herself some time to maintain her inner peace for a bit more. Okay, she had avoidance issues. She could admit to those.
"I will call him. It's on the to-do list for 3:00 pm."
Aurora snorted almost on cue. "Are you scheduling your breakups now? That's weirdly on brand for you."
"Vivianne here asked me to be more organised." The aforementioned sighed, tiredly, and threw her a glare. All Sloane did was smile. "I'm not scheduling my breakups. It's just a reminder." Not that she would forget about it. Her mind had been dancing around it since her best friend arrived from Monza and mentioned she'd avoided Max as much as she could. "To boost myself."
Both of her companions shared a quick glance, barely noticeable to her, and then after a little laugh from Aurora...silence again. It kept going like that for the next thirty minutes. She was getting anxious. Why were they so quiet?
When she parted her lips to bother Vivianne once again, ask for Salma and Irina or whatever else, the sound of two knocks filled the whole flat. Sloane perked up, peeling off from Aurora and sitting straight on the sofa. Gaze nailed on the door. Vivianne and Aurora looked at one another.
"Who is that?" She questioned. Her two lines of company since leaving Monaco were there with her. "Please don't tell me that's your boyfriend visiting." Her face twisted into a grimace.
No hard feelings for Charles, they were way past that, but she preferred if her ex-boyfriend didn't get first-row tickets to her pity party. Preserving the last remains of her dignity or something like that.
Aurora patted her leg and placed her computer on the coffee table before pushing from the sofa to walk to the door. No words were uttered. Sloane followed her every move with attention, only glancing at her manager once. This one shrugged disinterestedly and adjusted her glasses, looking at Aurora as well.
When her best friend opened the door, her stomach — and heart, probably — dropped. In a matter of seconds, she left the sofa too. Of course. The silence was too loud, she should've known.
"Oh—what is Max doing here?" Aurora locked eyes with her, having the audacity of feigning dismay. Max stood in the hallway, his gaze directed at her.
