It was the end of my first week at my new hospital. I was a pediatric nurse at Seattle Grace. Everyone was being nice to me, especially the new surgical interns. However, there was one intern who kept acting weird around me, she kept asking me personal questions...like personal, personal. If it wasn't for her asking questions like that, I'd date her. She's so hot and adorable at the same time. Too bad. Speak of the devil, here she was again.
Heather: Soooo...Dr. Davies
Katrina: Mavis.
Heather: Oh...
Katrina: You should know that from all the personal questions you've been asking.
Her face dropped and her eyes got glassy. Whoa. I didn't mean to do that.
Heather: Ha...sorry about that...I'm going to.....prep a patient. Yeah!
I grabbed her wrist before she could walk away. She looked at my hand and then up at me. I frowned and stared into her eyes trying to read her expression. She pulled her wrist out of my grasp and sighed.
Heather: What...?
Katrina: You ok?
Heather: No! Leave me alone.
Katrina: Why are you so cold all of a sudden?
Heather: Are you kidding?
I shook my head and she just walked off to the other interns. God, she's moody. A few seconds later her friends came up to me.
Leah: Are you blind?
Katrina: I can see you so...no.
I smiled and turned back to the chart.
Jo: She's been trying to ask you out all day and you haven't got the hint.
Katrina: Ohhhh. Aah...tell her I'm sorry about that.
I pursed my lips and shrugged my shoulders.
Leah: Oh come on, at least go on a date with her.
Katrina: No.
Jo: You're telling me you don't like her even a little?
Katrina: I do. Well...I did. Her bad flirting put me off.
Leah: That is such a bad excuse.
Jo: Just talk to her.
She smiled and dragged the other away. The next day, Heather came up to me again.
Heather: Hi...I'm sorry about that...Y'know...last week's situation.
Katrina: It's...fine?
Heather: Doyouwannagooutwithme?
I looked at her weirdly, the words flashed out of her mouth at the speed of light.
Katrina: Pardon?
Heather: Do you want to go out...with me?
I sighed.
Katrina: When do you get off?
Heather: 7 pm.
Katrina: Me too. Joe's?
Heather: Sure.
She smiled and her cheeks went a bright rosy pink. I'll give this a shot. If I don't like her then I can always tell her I don't want to go on a second date.
Later on, I met Heather in the lobby. She tried to hold my hand and I didn't stop her. Maybe she wasn't as weird as I thought. Maybe it was just nerves.
Katrina: You ready?
Heather: Yeah.
I smiled at her and we walked out of the hospital doors, hand in hand, over to Joe's.
7 years later:
Katrina: At that is the story of how I and your mommy met.
Rosie: AGAIN, AGAIN!
She jumped up and down on the bed.
Katrina: Ok, ok, calm down, honey. Sweetheart, do you want to tell them this time?
Heather: Sure thing, sweet.
I kissed her cheek as she told them the story again. I got up and went to the kitchen to wait for her to be done putting our kids to bed. I put my hands on the kitchen counter and sighed. I was stressed because of a patient I had, he had died a few days ago. I only changed his IV fluids and things like that but we got close. A few seconds later, I felt arms wrap around my waist.
Heather: You still upset, sweet?
Katrina: I'm fine, sweetheart.
I turned around and looked at her smiling softly. Her warm hand cupped my cheek and I leaned into it.
Heather: I love you, Katrina Brooks.
Katrina: I love you too, Heather.
I kissed her and pulled her into a warm embrace, feeling safe and secure.
