"I forgot," I told my mom during dinner. I sat my fork down after I finished my last bite, "I have to go to Tony's, he has the other half of a project we're doing..."
My mom didn't say anything right away, she just finished eating before she finally looked at me, "Okay," She said; "Do you need a ride?"
I hesitated before I shook my head, "No, no, it's alright... It's not that far of a walk," I hurried to get up and put my plate on the counter. "I'll be back, in an hour?" I estimated, "Love you!" I rushed out the front door. Tony's wasn't more than a 10 minute walk from my house. I wanted answers. I wanted to hear his explanation for what I heard after he dropped me off at my house.
"Tony?" I said as I got into his driveway, he peeked his head out from under the hood of his car and stood up fully as I got near him.
"Cass, hey," He greeted me as he wiped his hands off. His dad walked over and looked at me.
"Is something wrong with your car?"
Tony shook his head, "Nothing wrong yet," He told me, "It's called taking care of things... Uh, dad, you remember Cassandra?"
His dad gave me a confused look before he nodded, "Right, yes, how are you doing, Cassandra?"
"I'm good," I replied with a small smile on my face.
"So, what's up?" Tony asked me as his dad walked back into their garage.
"Um... Nothing," I wasn't sure why I was hesitant to ask about what I heard, "Well, I have a few questions."
His dad walked back over and nodded, "Alright, that should do it. Start her up," His dad looked over at me and I sheepishly nodded and got into Tony's car, "Okay... Flip the ignition," He told me. I turned the key over and the car rumbled on. His dad nodded, impressed. "You hear that? That's how it should sound."
I looked over at the two of them, confused. "That sounds different?"
Tony laughed, "Yeah, it's different. Are you deaf?"
I shrugged, "It just sounds exactly the same."
Tony nodded, "Then you are deaf... That's so much smoother, like night and day."
"Okay, shut her off," His dad then said.
I turned the key off and I got out of the car and stood up, sighing. "I should get home," I told Tony.
His dad seemed confused, "What? Sure you don't want to stay for dinner?" He asked me.
I shook my head, "I actually just ate dinner, thank you... Uh, if I don't get home soon my mom's probably going to call Deputy Standall- the school emailed parents again."
Tony's dad closed the hood of the car and shook his head, tsking, "Oh, I know... She leave a note?" He then asked, looking over at Tony and I, "Girl who killed herself?"
I shook my head, "I don't know... They don't say much about it."
"Well, you listen to me," He projected his energy to Tony, "You ever do that to your mother, I will kill you, you understand? I will kill you dead... Clean this shit up," He then said before he walked away into the garage.
I laughed, "Wait, do you think he understands the irony of that?" I asked Tony.
Tony shook his head, "He's a simple man..."
I looked over my shoulder and then back to Tony, "Okay, I should go..."
"I wish I could answer the questions you have," Tony then told me, I furrowed me brow. "But, that's not what Hannah wanted."
