(A/N: Before we begin, I must give a big congrats to the new expecting mother that is our Goddess. What a terrific mother she will be!

P.S. sorry it's taken so long to update this. I am not proud of how long it took but looking to get back into it.

Now, onto the story. Enjoy!)

The next day, Devlin already knew exactly where to meet Maria. It was their old spot at Central Park, a nice little bench right by the lake. Rose hasn't been here since that last time a few years ago, when she left that note with the ring. It didn't really help this situation, but Devlin knew this had to be done, especially here. Maria was sitting on the bench waiting for him as he arrived. Devlin immediately caught her scent as he approached with his cane in hand. She stood to properly greet him.

"Thankyou for coming. I wasn't sure if you would" she said.

It was taking everything Devlin had to be here, do this, and especially keep himself composed through it all. He let out a calming sigh through the nose before speaking.

"It's been a long time since I've been here"

Maria nodded with understanding.

"Same for me. I've missed this place"

Things were already beginning to get awkward, so Devlin went ahead and took his seat on the bench while Maria joined him.

"I'm... not really sure where I should begin" she nervously admitted.

"Just tell me what happened" Devlin pleaded, having waited to hear this for such a long.

"You remember my father?" Devlin nodded yes. "When I returned home after our day together, I found out he got mixed up with some really bad people. We had no other choice but to get as far away as we could. Otherwise, they would have come after all of us; me, my sister, maybe even you for all I knew"

"But, if that's true, why didn't you just tell me? I would've gone with you"

"I know, but I couldn't risk your life. I couldn't pull you away from everything you have here"

Devlin sighed as he leaned back on the bench, doing his best to take everything in. It was great to finally get some answers, but those too came with their own load to carry. Now, he felt as if he had hated her for nothing. He felt like their future had been stolen away. So many thoughts and emotions running through him now. It was hard to know what to think or how to feel. It was especially hard to put away feelings that had stuck with him for the past few years. Maria could only place a hesitant yet comforting hand on Devlin's. It was clear she still cared about him and felt the same way about this as he did.

"I really am sorry, Devlin. If there was any other way, or any way I could..." She trailed off, unable to find the right words now.

They were both silent for a moment, Maria granting Devlin whatever time he needed to comprehend everything. Devlin took comfort in the warmth of her hand, having missed her touch, but he couldn't let himself get carried away with it. Maria could tell he wasn't too comfortable with it, so she gently retracted her hand. Devlin took a deep breath as he tried to remain calm and take everything in. He reminded himself of the other factors in this and quickly carried the conversation further.

"Is your family safe?"

Maria also took a deep breath before responding.

"Yes, everything was resolved. My father's safe and my sister is off living her best life"

"That's good" Devlin nodded with a smile, but there was something else he had to know. "How long have you been back?"

"About a year now. I didn't say anything because... well, I didn't think you would want to see me again"
