Chapter 5 - Visiting an old Friend

Will spent the rest of the day at home. Hopper questioned him on why he was at the Carver's. Will told him about Troy and James and Jason offering to run with him and getting rid of the bullies. Hopper was skeptical but told Will to limit his time with Jason because he caused chaos during Spring Break.

After supper, Hopper and Joyce along with Jane were watching TV. Will sat in the small room that served as an office and used the typewritter to write some more fantasy stories like he did with Zoran. Hopper left the police scanner on and while reading some old D&D campaign notes a message came over the scanner.

"Send an ambulance to 2616 Maple Street. Male adolescent unconscious......"

Will jumped up instantly. 2616 Maple Street is the address of the Wheelers. Will grabbed the flashlight on the desk and a roll of duct tape and ran out of room. He ran for his coat and shoes. Hopper and Joyce saw Will running toward the door and ran to him.

"Where are you going Will?" Hopper boomed out.

"The scanner said an ambulance was sent to the Wheeler residence. Mike was found unconscious." Jim's mouth hung open and Joyce grabbed Jim's arm with her face in a shocked expression. "I am going to the hospital." Will snook out before his parents could respond. He ran to his old red bike and taped the flashlight to the handlebars. He pushed off before his Mom could stop him.

"I am calling the station Joyce. You might want to tell Jane before you go get Will at the hospital." Joyce nodded and ran to the living room.

"What is wrong Joyce?" Jane saw something was terribly wrong.

"Will heard on the scanner that Mike was found unconscious and was being taken to the hospital. He ran there before we could say anything." Jane came to Joyce and hugged her.

"Can I come with?" Jane asked.

"Yes, get ready." Joyce said to Jane.

Hopper went to the Wheeler's and Joyce went to the Hospital. Will rode as fast as he could and made it to the hospital before the Wheelers showed up. When the family showed up Mrs. Wheeler saw Will sitting in the waiting room. She went to the desk while Nancy was in shock and she went straight to Will.

"What are you doing here? Are you here for Mike?" Will put out his arms and hugged Nancy.

"I heard on the scanner that an ambulance was requested to your house. I rode my bike here as fast as possible. Do you think he will be okay?" Tears were running down Will's face. "I am so sorry about what happened at school. I hope I can apologize to him in person. I really want to be his friend again." Nancy was happy Will cared. Mrs. Wheeler sat down with Nancy and they talked while Will sat farther away to give them some privacy. Mrs. Wheeler waved to Will and Will waved back. Joyce and Jane then came in and Joyce went to Karen to comfort her. Jane went to hug Nancy. Will was happy his Mom was there to comfort Mrs. Wheeler. When a doctor came out over an hour later, Karen and Nancy went with him to a corner to talk. After 5 minutes Karen came to the Hopper-Byers.

"It sounds like Mike will pull through. He needs some time to heal and regain his strength. Thank you for coming and your concern. Joyce hugged Karen than told the kids to go home with her. Will felt a weight lifted off his chest knowing Mike will live.

It was Wednesday the 19th and Will was eating with Zoran at lunch when Jason came over to the table. "Are you coming to try out this afternoon? It will be at the gymnasium right after school."

"Sorry, I have some personal business I have to take care of. I am not very athletic anyway. Thanks for offering." Will grabbed the back of his neck acting he made a tough decision.
