CHAPTER NINE
THE KISS

"I told you, I'm fine." Asami sighs into the phone, finishing up her essay about bullying and anti-social behavior that Miss Wada is going to force her to read to the class. She secretly prays it takes other people too long to read theirs so she can go next class. She is truly not in the mood to present a paper she is not putting her 100% into because she is unable to focus. Her mind keeps drifting off to what had occurred at the school. Every time she closes her eyes, she sees Maru looming over her.

"Fine?" Hikari screeches in the phone. "You were nearly killed and we had to find out by the news!"

"That girl just screams crazy." Kaori chimes in. "I can see it in her psychotic eyes in her mug shot."

"Yeah, she is extremely crazy. You should see how crazy she looks when she's holding a knife." Asami jokes. Silence on the other end. "Why does no one laugh at my jokes? Does no one appreciate dark humor anymore?"

"It's not funny when it has happened," Kazuki says, a tone of defeat in his voice.

"Well I think it's funny so laugh with me." Asami snaps. She is sick of people not going along with her coping mechanism. How is she suppose to feel better about a situation when she cannot even laugh at it?

"You really need to start focusing more on your safety. You got lucky with Maru because other people were there. What would have happened if you were alone? Or worse, if it was Emica in Maru's place?" Kazuki asks. Asami's hand freezes in its writing position. She stares absentmindedly at her writing, imagining the different scenarios Kazuki has painted. What would she have done? Maru would've successfully stabbed her if Haruhi didn't tackle the crazy girl in time. And if it was Emica? Asami most likely wouldn't be in her room in the mansion with her father and brother right now. She'll probably be on a plane or a boat heading to a new country. She'll never would've seen Tamaki or her friends again. "Do you understand the severity of these situations now?"

"But it wasn't Emica. It was a crazy stalker who was in love with Tamaki." She comments. "I fought Maru off pretty well on my own when Haruhi left to go get help. I'm sure I could've swiped her knees out from under her, but Haruhi tackled her before I could."

"Because unlike you, Haruhi cares about your safety." Kazuki snaps. "Goodnight, Asami." He hangs up. Silence fills the phone for a few moments. Asami's hand tightens on her phone as she tries to not let her anger overcome her.

"He's a bit dramatic tonight, isn't he?" Kaori laughs before yelping in pain.

"No, he isn't! Asami, he's right. This could've been so much worse. We love you and we care for your safety. It hurts us to know that you were in a dangerous situation and didn't even feel the need to tell us about it. How can you call us your friends when you won't even rely on us?" Hikari grumbles.

"I do rely on you!" Asami shoots up from her bed in a blaze of anger. Her entire being feel hot. Why is this such a big deal? Sure, someone almost stabbed her, but they didn't. She's fine, why can't they accept that answer? Tears swell in her eyes while she tries to force them to go away, blink rapidly as she stares up at the ceiling light in her room. How can she act like everything is okay when no one is willing to go along with it?

"When have you relied on us?" Hikari asks.

"When I found out Emica was my kidnapped and not my mother." Asami states. "I confided in you three about how I felt about everything. You guys made sure I was good mentally and even made jokes with me about the situation to make me feel better about it. Why can't we do that with this situation?"
