"I have everything under control" I replied as I took a pretzels from the grocery bag. "You do?" she asked. "Yeah I applied for this night school to get my GED" I said with a mouthful. "When you start?" she asked. "Next week" I replied. "Good but who going to watch this princess?" Yolanda asked. "You or the McKnights" I replied. "Okay baby" she said. "I got to go but call me so I can come watch her" she said kissing me on the cheek.

It was awkward stepping back into my old high-school. "Good Evening class" the teacher said. "We have exactly one whole month to get you ready for the exam. I will cover mathematical reasoning, language arts, science, and social studies. So please bare with me we'll be going a little quick" he said. This week we are doing mathematical reasoning. "Today we're doing stem and leaf plots and pictograph" he added as he wrote on through board.

I know most of this I thought to myself. What am I doing here? I cooled down and focused. I put myself here so here I am. I opened my notebook and followed along. After class I had to take the bus down to Yolanda place to get her. "Hi Nick. How was it?" she asked. "Boring cause all know all that stuff" I said throwing myself on the couch. "Hang in there" she said. "Tiara is asleep" she said getting her bags. "Thanks" I replied grabbing it. "Not just for this but for everything" I said hugging her.

"No problem papa" she said. I grabbed Tiara and went on the bus. While on the ride there we hit a speedbump and Tiara wouldn't stop crying. I gave her the pacifier, milk, peek-a-boo and nothing worked. People grew angry and gave me dirty looks. "Please shut that baby up" an old man growled. "Look man you need to shut up too. I'm trying" I snapped. I rubbed her head softly and she quiet down slowly. When I got off the bus I was relieved. When I got home I showered and went to sleep.

The next morning I found a letter from Free. He said he missed my positive vibe and wish to be like me. That meant alot. Later that afternoon I went job hunting. "Mr. Thomas" a lady yelled. I jumped up but not to quick before Tiara woke up. I picked up the carriage and headed over in the office. "You may be seated" she said shaking my hand. "Well Mr. Thomas first thing I noticed was....you don't have a high-school diploma" she said analyzing my application. "Well I'm working on that as we speak but I'm getting my GED in four weeks" I replied. I kept bouncing my leg because I was nervous. "Also you....are an ex-con a fresh one too" she said eying me. "Yes....I am but that 11 month penalty changed me" I replied. "Look Mr. Thomas we don't hire people like you. To be honest" she said bluntly.

Tiara started crying and I went to give her a bottle. "We'll see if a miracle happens" she said opening the door and handing me a card. "Keep it" I said walking out. I went across the street to a Krispy Kreme. I ordered a chocolate doughnut and a glazed. I broke it into small pieces for Tiara. That's when I noticed a help wanted sign. I got up to speak to the manager. "Well we do need the help" the manager said. "You're hired come first thing Friday morning" he said.

"Yes sir" I said with enthusiasm. "Great" he replied giving me a extra doughnut. Later that day Ms. McKnight came over to watch Tiara as I went to school. After school I stopped by the corner store to get diapers. I walked through the aisle staring at the prices. "$8.35" the cashier said as she put it in a plastic bag. "I only got 8" I said handing it to her. "Fine" she said staring at me. "Thanks" I said smiling.

Four weeks later

Man these past few weeks been rough. Most of my paycheck went to Tiara, grocery, and bus fare. Tomorrow morning I took the exam for my GED. Tonight I had Tiara over at Yolanda. I walked into a bar to get some wings. "May I get spicy Buffalo wings, some fries, and a cold water" I said. I wanted a nice drink but I had to keep my promise. "This card was declined" the bartender said handing me back my credit card. I handed him another one as I watched the Chicago Bulls versus Los Angeles Clippers.

He gave me the receipt and my food. "My card" I said. He threw it right in front of me. When I finished I was going to go home but they went into overtime. "Hey big boy" a soft voice said into my ear making my neck hair stand. I turned to see a fine hour glass figure woman. "What's good?" I replied. "I'm so drunk and my girls left me" she said dropping the drink on herself. "That's messed up" I replied. "I know. Can you take me home" she said falling into my lap. "I don't got a car" I replied getting her up. "I do silly" she said running her finger down my chest.

I threw her arm around my shoulder and took her to the lot. I held her alarm to see a Mercedes Benz blink. I put her in the back seat. I turned on her car and pressed her home on the GPS. She lived far in the suburbs. Half way I went to stop at a gas station. I saw two men shake each other hands and exchanged somethings. I remember those days. I sighed and got back in the car. When we arrived I tried every key to unlock the door. "None of the keys work" I said.

"Dam I think Rasheeda has it" she said laughing. She was designated driver. "Now what?" I asked. She took a pot and threw it through the side glass and unlocked the door from inside. An alarm went off and she quickly disarmed it. I stepped over the glass carrying her upstairs. "Over there" she said. I placed her on the bed. She pulled my face toward her vaginal area. She laughed as I pulled away. "I need a glass of water" she said. I found a glass by her dresser and got some tap water. When she came out the bathroom. She had a robe on. Here" she said handing me a cup to pee in. After I passed my test I went to church. It was empty. I got on one knee and bowed my head. "Oh heavenly lord please forgive me for my sins and guide me...." I said pausing. Then I realized I had to get down to my school to take the exam. "Amen" I yelled. I got right on time before he locked the door. As I scan the screen I looked at the questions. I knew some without doubt but some were real head scratchers.
