Ember's POV
My name is Alpha Ember and my story started when I did not appear on the front page. I was born in the Timber Wolf pack, the most powerful pack, with the dominant male line. My destiny was sealed when I was born. I was a great disappointment to my father. First, he lost his mate due to a fatality during childbirth and this led him to go insane and hate me. He was expecting a boy to be born. As I said, this is the male-dominant pack. Though my father loved his mate dearly, her demise made him cold and stone. The mate and wife of the beta of the pack raised me. She was my mother's best friend. She had a daughter of my age, Selena. Selena and I have been friends since childhood and we were more like sisters. It was time I had not shifted yet and only made my father even more disappointed. He was worried about the heir. As I was his only child and according to pack laws, only male heirs could become Alpha. They all knew I was Alpha born, but an Alpha who had no wolf? Strange.
"But Alpha, we should worry about this," said Beta Eric, Selena's father.
"I know but we have to do something," said my father.
"Alpha, if you don't mind, I need to say something," said Welma, Selena's mother. She raised me and she was better than anyone in the pack. The sweet bubbly woman.
"Yeah, go on," said the Alpha.
"I suggest we can train Ember to be an Alpha," said Welma. Her mate gave her a sigh that was sure he was asking her to be quiet.
My father's expression turned annoyed.
"Welma, you know the pack needs a male heir, females are not suitable for the dominant value of Alpha," he said.
"But Alpha...I was..." Welma tried to make her clear when Beta spoke.
"Welma, Alpha is right. A female cannot be an Alpha. You should know that, if Ember was the daughter of a beta, she could get that rank of beta easily. But for Alpha, it is impossible," said the beta.
Welma remained quiet.
I have spent my childhood away from all the politics of the pack, but somehow I had natural instincts to be Alpha and I knew the value of running the pack.
My father never put attention to my needs, all he saw was a burden. We had a strained relationship since the beginning.
Summer was approaching the pack and we were on summer break. We were having fun in human territory. We called it human territory because of its human population, but this territory was under my father's rule as well.
"Here is your vanilla ice-cream," said Selena, while offering me the ice-cream.
"You know," I said, smiling.
"Yeah, I am your best friend. What are you expecting?" Selena said.
I took the spoon full of ice-cream and put it in my mouth and it heavenly melted in my mouth.
"So what have you thought about high-school?" asked Selena.
I took a deep breath.
"You know the Alpha..." I said.
"Don't worry, I have asked my mother to talk to Alpha," she said.
I wonder sometimes what if Selena had never been there for me, how I would have survived.
"Okay, I will think," I said, shortly.
I looked around; there were other wolves in human territory. A lot of rich Alphas were there as well. I rolled my eyes because I hate those rich brats, all they care about is their dominant values and setting weaker bodies on stakes.
"Hey, where have you lost?" asked Selena.
I smiled.
"Nowhere," I said and got up. "Lets go home," I said.
*********
My father was at the meeting as usual. I knew he always does that to avoid me, even at home he pretends he is busy. I don't remember a day when my father made me feel better. Our relationship was as toxic as Belladonna.
I wonder if he was like this with my mother, but all Welma told me about their relationship was totally different. He was a loving, caring husband even though he was excited about my birth, but how everything changed was just a mystery.
I got inside my room and threw my bag on the couch. I have lived in this room since childhood. I was all well decorated and Welma told me that my dad designed that room when I was not even born, but now he hates it and wants me to get out of his sight as soon as possible.
I took a deep breath and memories from childhood appeared in my head. I closed my eyes and two tears dropped from the corner of my eyes.
I wanted to scream and put out my frustration towards my father but nothing happened.

"Look who is it? The goody goody Alpha no shifts," said Needy, she is the bully of the school and the girl I hated most. It is my habit now to hear those words from my pack members.
"Hey freaks, shut it up," said Selena, she was always there to help me.
"Yeah, go and hide behind your beta," said Windsor, one of the bullies.
I clenched my teeth and made a movement when Selena stopped me. My eyes turned golden.
"No, you can't do it, you could get yourself into trouble," said Selena in a whisper.
I took a deep breath and my eyes turned back to normal green. I knew if I beat their asses my father would not be proud. Instead, he would order humiliating punishment for me. I remember the last time he asked me to bow to everyone I met in a pack in order to teach me some respect.
"I really want to beat their asses," said Selena. They were all laughing at me.
"Come on," I said, heartlessly, and walked ahead. Just then, someone threw a ball at me. It almost hit my head when someone grabbed the ball on time.
I looked up at my savior. He was 6.2ft tall. He had deep brown eyes and the coldness in them was enough to give a shiver through anyone's spine.
Everyone went silent; his gaze was enough to make them quiet.
He had a very dreaded aura. His back was towards me, towering over me. I took a deep breath and his intoxicating scent touched my nose.
He turned to me cold and stared into mine green eyes. He walked away.
Selena was looking at him leaving with admiring and excited expressions. I turned to her.
"What is it?" I asked her.
"Again, you don't know him? Oh please," she said, disappointed.
I rolled my eyes.
"He is Alpha Nathan, you should have known this," she said, excited.
"And who is Alpha Nathan?" I asked, shrugging.
She gave me a death stare.
