I awoke quickly to the sound of sizzling bacon. "(Y/N). Are you okay?" I glanced around to see the Onceler in his signature pink apron with a skillet of bacon in his hand heading towards two shiny white plates on a small table. "You were mumbling in your sleep. And then you just shot up." My eyes widened as I remembered my dream. I must stop him from becoming corrupt.

"I'm fine. I just had a nightmare, is all. It happens all the time." I lied, and he seemed to believe me. "I'm glad I'm not the only one around here with nightmares. Except mine are about my mother disowning me.." He trailed off, putting the bacon on the two plates. "Your mom?" He nodded. "Yeah, she doesn't really see me as anything. That's why I want to become successful so she loves me again.." He sighed sadly and sat down at the table, grabbing his fork.

"Shouldn't your mom love you whether you're big in business or not?" He looked up questioningly. "What..do you mean?" He took a bite of his bacon. "Well, she's your mom. It's just common sense." I shrugged. "Though with the way you describe her, she sounds a little like a gold digger." His eyes widened and then narrowed. "Don't talk about my mother that way." He said, finishing the last of his bacon. He got up, washing his plate. "I'm going out to sell my thneed. See you later." He ran outside the door, grabbing his thneed and hat as he ran outside. He then walked back inside.

"Forgot to change.." He quickly grabbed his clothes and ran into the next room, changing quickly and then ran out again. I sat there with the remains of my bacon. I quickly ate the rest of it and washed, rinsed, dried, and put away the few dishes that sat sadly in the sink.

I heard the door open and in walked the Lorax. He stopped when he saw me at the sink. "I thought you were going with beanpole." He continued walking into the house. "He got upset for me insulting his gold digger mom." I shrugged, and the Lorax huffed a laugh. "Never met the lady, but if you think so, I'm sure she is." He stopped walking, grabbing a bag of Marshmellows that sat lonely-like on the couch. "Have a seat. I think it's time you and I had a chat."

My eyebrow raised. Did he know about the dream? Was I that loud last night with my mumbling? I walked over to the couch where Lorax had sat down, his feet not even touching the ground. He pat the space next to him, and I sat down.

"It's time I told you the truth." Now, this was getting interesting. "I am the Lorax, I speak for the trees. But I'm also the embodiment of a God. Of course, I don't have all the fancy, smancy powers that this God has, but I have some. You are (Y/N) a human set out to live her life with adventure and craziness. Unfortunately, you got a little too adventurous and crazy and got yourself killed. Luckily, I was able to revive you. But that cost you your freedom. You are now stuck in this forest to protect the trees as a fairy." He made a strange wing movement with his hand. "Say what now? I don't know if I should believe you... but then again, the dream." The Lorax perked up quickly.

"You're having dreams now?" He stared at the necklace around my neck. One crack had appeared in the crystal.

"Yeah." I ended up telling him every detail of the dream I had. His family leaving, my necklace saving the forest, the Onceler loving me..

The Lorax listened well and gave his response on the matter. "Those aren't dreams, (Y/N). Well, they are, but they're glimpses of the future. You are bound to this forest. Whenever the forest is in danger, even in the future, you will know. That dream was warning you about Beanpole getting too greedy and destroying the forest." He glances at a picture of the Onceler standing next to a bunch of people. A blonde woman in particular was frowning at Onceler, who was smiling widely and holding up a drawing of his thneed. "And these people, his family, is what will cause this change of heart." He pointed at the blonde woman.

"You need to get rid of them.. before it is too late and you need to give yourself to the forest again." He looked at me firmly. "If you don't get rid of them, then at least change their mindset. Make them in favor of the trees, and not in favor of harming them. I have a feeling that the blonde lady will be a bit of a tough nut to crack." He pointed at the blonde woman frowning at Onceler.

"I'll try my best. But, what about this?" I pulled up my sleeve, showing the wound that I had recently patched up. "A wound symbolizing your connection to the forest. Every time a tree falls, you're wounded. Once the last truffula tree falls...it's lights out for you." So it's true.

"I think I hear beanpole coming back. Do not tell him a word of anything we talked about. But remember what I said. Change their hearts or get rid of them." He said as he jumped out the back window.

As he did that, the door slammed open, and in walked the Onceler, covered in tomatoes. "Oh no. What happened?" He took his fedora off and unbuttoned his gray vest. "They didn't like my song. They decided to show their dislike by throwing tomatoes at me. But hey, it's fine. Tomorrow I'll get them to buy my thneed." He had a look of determination on his soft features.

"I think you will too. Who would turn down a useful tool sold by an incredibly handsome man." I said without realizing. "You think I'm handsome? Thank you." He said bashfully. "Yeah, uh. You're welcome." You tried to make it as unawkward as possible. "I'm going to change. Maybe we can hang out afterward." He walked into the other room, changing into a gray tee shirt and black pants. He held his dirty clothes in his hands and walked outside, beckoning me to follow him.

He grabbed the hose and began washing his clothes. He added a nice smelling soap and scrubbed. As he washed, he hummed. "Oh, (Y/N), can you hang the clothesline?" I nodded and began hanging the string with clothes pins. I heard the rushing of water, which was probably him rinsing the soap out. "All done. Thanks for your help." He smiled, hanging up his wet clothes to dry.

"C'mon. I found a really cool spot on the way back here. It's super pretty." He walked away, and I followed him. We passed the Lorax who was looking at me. He mouthed the words, "Don't mess this up," and I was sure he was talking to me.

I was certain that on this day, I would make a new beginning for the Onceler. Now that I found out how his story ends, I would make things right. Little did I know how hard making things right would be.
