We were nearing Hogwarts and Hermione suggested we get changed into our robes. We did so, and when we were done we could see the magnificent building on the horizon. It was a weathered old castle made of grey bricks placed each in the perfect spot. There was a great black lake in front of the school, with what looked like a squid emerging from it. There were plenty of grounds to roam and a few hippogriffs, as Harry called them, near a shabby house.
The castle looks like it's bursting with places to explore, and classes to take. The whole thing radiates magic, it's like you can feel it.
"I-is that a giant squid?" I asked Harry, although it was obvious.
"Oh, yes I was confused too when I first saw it." replied Harry consolingly.
Hermione started bickering again, "You know, Harry, if you had read 'Hogwarts a History,' then you would have expected it!"
"Don't worry about reading that book, me and Ron still haven't, and we're doing fine." Harry said in return to the mortified look on my face. I was thankful to him for clearing this up because for a second I thought I had to read that book.
"OH HARRY!" Hermione wined, "You MUST read it this year, what if I'm not there to tell you something!?"
"Well, I guess we'll just fail then. I'm not reading some boring bloody book." replied Ron, even though the comment wasn't towards him.
"Oh I didn't mean it like that, and you know that!" said Hermione, who was pretty ticked off at this point.
"Should I read it?" I asked as the train slowed down.
"Don't worry about that now. You have to go with Hagrid, but we have to go on the carriages, okay?" Harry replied hurriedly.
"Who's Hagrid?!" I asked desperately as we started leaving the train.
"You'll see him!" Harry yelled over the roaring crowd.
"Oh, you'll see him alright!" I heard Ron mutter.
"O-ok," I said, now climbing the steps off the train and losing track of the three of them.
"FIRST YEARS!!! FIRST YEARS OVER 'ERE!!!" a huge man yelled. I figured this was Hagrid. He had thick fluffy hair, a beard too, both were quite long. He had small beetle eyes and a kind smile. I walked towards him as fast as I could in the flood of people. I almost fell down three times but regained my balance. I made my way over to the crowd of first years gathered around Hagrid, who was explaining that all first years are travelling to the school by boat.
"Come on now, into the boats," Hagrid says loudly. "Four students per boat," He gestures to behind him, where dozens of boats are stationed. I climb into an empty boat, and other students follow. I stay quiet as the others eagerly chat.
After the awkward boat ride, we get out where a woman is standing waiting for us.
"I am Professor McGonagall. Welcome to Hogwarts. You will be sorted into one of four houses: Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, or Slytheryn. Form a straight line."
I stood at the very end of the line, hoping no one would talk to me. Professor McGonagall led us into the Great Hall of the school. There were tables and tables of students. Some wore blue ties, others wore red or yellow or green.
At the very front of all of them, there was a long table filled with what I assume are professors. There was also a stool with an old, worn, and tattered hat sitting on it. One-by-one, all of the first years sat on the stool. Professor McGonagall sets the hat on their heads, and then the hat calls out the house they are to be in.
I'm last. I sit on the stool and Professor McGonagall places the hat on my head. I can hear the hat whispering to itself, "What house to put her in... She's aspiring.. Has great potential... Wants to be noticed... not brave enough for Gryffindor, though.." that hat pauses before it calls out "SLYTHERIN!"
A roar of congratulations emerges from the table of students with the green ties. I scan the table for Harry, but he's not there. McGonagall lifts the hat off my head and gestures for me to go sit over with the other Slytherins. I found an empty seat. It's across from the towhead from the train. I look around at the other tables, and see Harry sitting with the students wearing red ties. He's a Gryffindor. He's sitting with Ron and Hermione, and I catch him looking over at me. I smile a bit and wave, unsure if we would be able to still be friends.
The towhead I'm sitting across from snorts. He saw me wave to Harry. "I saw you and Potter hanging out on the train," he says. "If I were you I would stay away from him. He's much too narcissistic" He extends his hand to shake. "I'm Malfoy. Draco Malfoy." I shake back, although I don't believe what he said about Harry.
"I'm Rosalynn Evermoor," I responded.
He continues on about Harry. "If you ask me, Potter's overrated."
"He seemed nice.." I say.
"'Nice' won't get you anywhere in life," Draco says, matter-of-factly.
I look back over at Harry, but he looks away. I look up at the long table in the front of the hall, where an old man with a long, silver beard steps up to a podium and begins speaking. "Welcome all new first year students. If you don't know me already, I am Albus Dumbledore, the Headmaster. We have a new Defence Against The Dark Arts professor this year, Professor Lockhart!"
A roar of applause drifted up from the tables. Draco doesn't look impressed. I whisper to him, "Who's Lockheart?"
"A famous author, although he doesn't seem too bright." He whispered back. "Everyone knows that, unless they're muggle born." He says suspiciously.
"O-oh. I'm not muggle born-" I lied. I don't really know if I am or not, but I could tell Draco wasn't a fan of them. Note to self: I thought. Order a genetics test.
