My mother had told me.
Steer clear of the new boy in town. He is bad news. Always riding his motorcycle, with his cliche leather jacket and tossled unkempt jet black hair.
“Bad news Leeroy, bad news...I do not want to see you anywhere close to him. Might you catch the plague.” she had said.
She was wearing The Deadly Look, that I usually called, TDL.
Avoiding any drama between her and I, I chose to comply. Trying my very best not to bump into the new boy. I changed my route back home, and started spending more time in the library at school just so I wouldn't see him make out with every living creature in the school hallways. Not that I cared or anything...right? ...Right!
As per my agreement with my mother, I was doing exactly that. Walking away from the new boy who had become as popular as I was friendless at school. He was leaning on his motorcycle, while smoking a cigarette. Two girls clinging onto him, while Jack and his crew wildly gestured to him.
I watched them all, sighing deeply and wondering how awesome they would be in the future. Telling their grandkids about the "high school experience"
I had nothing to tell mine.
I pulled at the strings of my backpack and began walking in the direction heading for home. Slightly humming a melodious tune.
My pupils danced about, admiring the creation. How well the trees swayed, gently on hot summer afternoon. How the birds chirped and flew as if the world wasn't burning itself down to the ground. How I too ignored the reality of life.
It was mesmerising.
For a short while, because as I marvelled at the world art. My eyes landed on a Greek sculpture, a being he took his time to create.
A pair of grey eyes, that seemed to be in conflict with his midnight jet black hair, yet paradoxically in harmony with them. A tall built, probably a 6' something that was an entire insult to my 5'3" stature. His well defined Jawline that could legit cut through ice. And Those...
Wait ...what was I about to say? What was I doing, staring at the forbidden!
Temptations I say!
Temptations!
I quickly averted my gaze towards the ground, a blush creeping in slowly.
“Leeroy...right?”was all he said.
I snapped my head up, looking at this, beaut...no, at the new boy.
“Leeroy, that's your name right?” he repeated himself again. As he put a packet of cigarettes in his pockets.
“ Yes, yes...my name is Leeroy...why do you ask?” was my reply.
What? ..don't look at me like that, my mother taught me manners ...and we all know ignoring someone is rude..very rude.
He looked at me, as if amused. His eyes twinkling with a shine I had never seen before. I couldn't help but ask.
“What?”
He shook his head, running his hand, up and down his face before chuckling.
“ I was just wondering, what kind of music you listened to. You don't look like the kind of person who listens to music that is not gospel themed.” he said, laughing at his own not so funny joke.
I wrinkled my nose in annoyance, and chose to ignore him. If I did that a little while longer, I would be safe behind the walls of my cozy home. Far away from the new boy.
“HIM.” he said. Jogging to catch with me.
I'm assuming he saw the look on face...utter confusion.
“HIM...that's my favourite song, I'm sure you would love it. Check it out would ya' after your late night studies ...you have those right? ...yeah you probably do, you look the part.”
Before I could respond, he had taken a hard right, heading for his home. It was few streets from mine anyways.
