I stood at the end of the bed, looking at myself one final time before sliding on my shoes, grabbing the new clutch that I had gotten today, and walking out the door. As I stood in the elevator, I wondered where we would be going. Normally, Steve insisted that I didn't overdress on our dates and this was totally going against that.
When I got to the main level of the building, I ran into Natasha."You look beautiful! That dress fits your figure and personality just right. Have a great time tonight." she said with a small wave.
As I stepped out onto the sidewalk, I was greeted by a man in a suit that helped me into a car. On the opposite side sat Steve in a suit as well. This being the first time that I had seen him this dressed up, it was a shock. He never looked like he didn't care but he didn't really make an effort to overdress. The look suited him very well. Steve leaned over and kissed my cheek."I hope that you had a great time with Nat today. She can be intimidating but the more you get to know her, the more she opens up."
"It was wonderful to get to spend time with her. She was very respectful and she seemed like a type of person that is worth getting to know better. Thank you for the opportunity to get to know all of these wonderful people better." I told him, and it was all true. Even all of the gifts that I had gotten for birthdays and Christmas couldn't really match up to what was happening recently.
"It was my pleasure. Everyone really wanted to get to know you anyway. I figured that now was as good as time as any for you to get to meet them. Now I just hope that they welcome you into the family, because I know that when they do, they will be able to see what a truly amazing person you are. Thank you for agreeing to come with me on such a short notice."
"It was my pleasure" I say, mimicking his words."How far away is this restaurant that you are taking me to? I was shocked to see how we were dressed for the night."
"Oh, you will see when we get there. I just wanted something a little different than the usual."
I nodded and took his hand, looking out the window at the lights of the city at night. It was an amazing sight to see. Within a few minutes, the driver stopped the car and opened the door to help me out. As I finished making my way out of the car, a wonderful smell wafted around me. It smelled of tomatoes and garlic bread and just the amazing smells of a truly authentic Italian restaurant.
Steve got out of the car and took my hand, leading me into the building and to our reserved seats. We both ordered a glass of wine as well as a glass of water while we decided what we wanted to eat. Everything sounded delicious and it made it hard to choose what sounded the best. As I set down the menu after deciding on the pasta with four-cheese sausage in a tomato creme sauce, I finally took a good look around the place. Pictures of families enjoying the food were framed along the walls. A large photo of a huge family, of which I assumed were the owners of the restaurant, hung beside the front desk. It wasn't an over populated place at this time but there were enough people here to create a quiet buzz that seemed to fit the bill for an original family-owned restaurant.
Being here took me back to the times when my family and I would go to the barbecue place in my hometown whenever my grandparents would come visit. That was before the crash that killed the ones that I held so dear. I was lucky to be sitting here today after spending almost six days in a coma that the doctors said that I could have died from. I had no family left that cared, so I was taken under (Y/f/n) wing and we became even closer.
Tears clouded my vision and I tried to blink them away before Steve could see them, but it didn't work."(Y/n), what's wrong? Why are you crying?"
I was hesitant to tell him, but I started the story from the beginning for him. As I went along, I noticed that tears had started to pool up in his eyes too and they were freely falling for me now. I had to take breaks and compose myself before continuing on and each time, Steve would just hold my hand even tighter. When I finally reached the end, I was a mess of tears and Steve had let a few roll down his cheeks as well. It was hard for me to replay the events that had scarred me so badly, both mentally and physically.
We sat in silence for a few moments as I tried to get my ragged breathing to return to normal. I excused myself and walked to the bathroom with my head down a little. Thankfully, the bathroom was a single so I wouldn't have anyone barging in and bothering me. I ran my hands under the cold water and splashed some on my face. It helped cool me down but didn't really help with the redness. I was glad that I had put some powder in my clutch in case of emergencies and applied some to the red splotches that formed on my cheeks and under my eyes. Lucky for me, my mascara hadn't ran so I didn't have to worry about fixing that. Satisfied with my look once more, I walked out and rejoined Steve at the table.
He took my hand again and gave me a small smile. Even the smallest glimmer in his baby blue eyes made me a little happier. The waitress came and took our orders and we returned to a less sad conversation. We joked and had a great meal. I couldn't have asked for a better dinner or a better person to enjoy it with. When we were finished, Steve payed the bill, being the true gentleman that he is, and we walked out into the chilly NYC evening.
I soon wished that I had remembered to bring a coat with me and tried rubbing my hands up and down on my arms. Steve stopped and took his jacket off and draped it around my shoulders. I tried to protest, but he stopped me saying,"I have survived in a lot colder than this. I will be fine, don't worry."
I thanked him and we continued on our walk. Steve told me of his childhood as we strolled down the walkway. He told me about how he became to be the super-soldier that he now is and how he started his journey into the Army. It was one hell of a story that was far better than anything that I could have said about my past. When he got to the part of the woman that he fell in love with while at war, Peggy, I could see how choked up he got. I could see the pain in his eyes over the ones that he has lost along the way. No person, no matter how strong, ever deserved to go through that much pain.
As we continued along, Steve seemed to gradually get happier. We made our way to a little bench in the center of Central Park and sat down. Steve tucked me under his arm and I sighed in contentment. The stars could be seen through the trees and the glow from the lights made it an almost heavenly sight. We sat there in a comfortable silence, neither of us making a move to end the moment. That was until a yawn found its way out of me and Steve insisted on us going back to the Tower.
When we arrived back, I went into my room to change. A smile formed on the edges of my mouth and I was overwhelmed with joy. I had an amazing night with an amazing person and I didn't want it to end. When I had a comfortable pair of sweats and a t-shirt on, I went to take my make up off. When I was just about to climb into bed, I had the sudden thought of staying with Steve. I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask and padded my way across the hall where I knocked on the door.
When Steve came to the door, he asked if something was wrong. I replied,"No, I just wondered if I could sleep with you tonight. It's a little lonely in that room all by myself."
A grin formed on Steve's face and he grabbed my hand while leading me to his bed. I crawled in on one side and he found his way to the other. He pressed a kiss to the side of my neck and I rolled over to meet his lips. The feeling was the same every time my lips met his. I pulled back and snuggled my way into the crook of his neck the way I first did when he came back from New York. His arm wrapped protectively around my waist and it wasn't long before I fell asleep.
No longer was I worried about a good night sleep. As long as I had Steve by my side everything was going to be just fine. I was home.
