A Crazy Day Off

More days flew by. Getting ready for my wedding was even more of a task when I also had to train and go on missions. I started to realize that in my free time, I was neglecting the rest of my team. Tony and Bruce always seemed to be in the lab all the time, so I didn't feel too bad about them. Natasha and I had spent quite a bit of time planning for the wedding and going out for random shopping sprees. That left Clint and Thor. I have come to notice that I didn't have much in common with them. The main reason for that being that I don't do much with them.

I felt guilty for almost ignoring them. Thor seemed like a pretty easy going guy so I wasn't too worried about what to do with him. Clint on the other hand, I had no clue what so ever what to do with him. One morning when I woke up, an idea popped into my head. Paint balling sounded like it would be fun for us to do and luckily we had the day off. It had been years since I had gone. The memory of going flooded back......

Standing at my locker wasn't a thing that I enjoyed to do at the end of the day. People raced around me and there was way too much noise. I jumped in surprise as a pair of arms wrapped around my waist. The sent of strong cologne wafted in my nose and I recognized it as my boyfriend Chase's. A small smile flitted across my face until I smelled the alcohol on his breath.

"Tomorrow we are going out with the guys. I'll pick you up at noon." Chase said, his words all slurring around.

"Where are we going?" I asked in a timid voice, choosing my words carefully. I knew how he could get when he was drunk.

"Paint balling. Now turn around so I can kiss you." his words slurred worse with ever passing second.

As much as I hated kissing him when he was drunk, I knew better than to not listen to him. I turned around to face him and he pressed a sloppy kiss to my mouth. When he wasn't intoxicated, he was about as sweet as the get. As soon as he had alcohol in his system though, he turned into a completely different person. I prayed that he would be sobered up by tomorrow, that was also dependent on how much he drank tonight too.

His friends charged their way down the hall, grabbing him and taking off. I was thankful that they had come in when they did. That night I was alone in my room, it was too cold to be out on the streets away from my personal little hell. My brother had friends over and I could hear them yelling and playing video games. Over their constant noise, I could just make out the sounds of my parents laughing about something. That was the night that things started to get better. I realized that this was all I had at the end of the day. If it weren't for them, I wouldn't exist.

I was about to fall asleep when my phone started buzzing. I knew that the only person that would call me at this time would be Chase. Dreading how drunk he was, I answered the call. "Hi baby. I was calling to make sure that you remembered that we were going out with the guys tomorrow."

A faint sight left me when I heard that it was his true voice and he had sobered up. "How could I forget? I'll be ready at noon for you to pick me up."

"Sounds good. Are you okay? You sound distant." he asked, pure concern laced in his voice.

"I'm okay I guess, just tired. I'll see you tomorrow babe."

"Goodnight my love."

I whispered a slight 'love you' before hanging up and passing out for the night. When I woke up, I had just enough time to get ready and grab something quick to eat. My parents were sitting in the kitchen when I walked down after my shower. I felt the need instantly to hug both of them, finding myself with tears in my eyes when I pulled away. They both had perplexed looks on their faced but must have decided not to push me anymore than receiving a hug. I grabbed an apple and explained my plan for the day. My story wrapped up right as I heard Chase honked the horn in his car. I yelled 'bye' as I ran out the door.

The rest of the day flew by in a blur. All I could remember was hitting at least 5 guys before one of them hit me in the abdomen, signaling that I was out of the game. Those were the good days of our relationship. Ones that kept me hopeful that they would pick back up again.

I blinked away tears remembering how that had ended for me. I still had some scars from when he got a little to angry. The day that I broke up with him, I told myself that I never would be with someone like that again. Chase was the reason that I never got too attached to anyone. I pulled myself out of bed and threw on some jeans and a tee. I ran down the hall to Clint's room and banged on the door, telling him to get ready. I continued down the hall and did the same to Thor.

While waiting for the boys to get done, I sat in the kitchen drinking a cup of tea. Steve came up behind me, asking what my plans were for the day. I told him where I was going to take Thor and Clint and got a fit of laughter out of him. "Good luck with that. They can both get very competitive." Steve warned me.

I smiled and thanked him for the warning. Just as I finished my cup of tea, I heard Thor and Clint thundering down the hall. I grabbed my purse and told them to meet me outside. I stood on the sidewalk laughing as they both tried to push through the same door at the same time. We finally started making our way down the sidewalk to the indoor paint ball arena. We all got suited up and got a gun filled with paint balls. A clock of 5 minutes started when we walked in separate doors. The object of the game was to be the last person to be in when the buzzer went off. The first few games were 'practice rounds' according to Clint. He was just upset the he had lost all of them. The last game was super intense and the time had been extended to 10 minutes. Doors to a whole other room had also opened for playing ground. I made my way successfully to the back corner of the newly opened room. I knew it was between Thor and I once again when I heard a chain of mumbled curse words from Clint not too far to my left. He walked past me on his way out and gave me words of encouragement,"You better kick his ass. He has gotten me out every single round. Get him."

With that, I gave him a nod and continued on. I silently moved my way forward, keeping my gun at the ready. Thor didn't exactly have the quietest footfalls and I was able to hit him square in the chest just as he rounded the corner in my direction. I jumped up and down in victory and laughed as Thor got a defeated look on his face. Clint gave me a high five as we put all of our gear on the table outside of the door. We payed for the time that we were there and made our way back to the tower.

I plopped down on the couch next to Steve when I got to the living room. Behind me Thor and Clint came in, pushing each other over something Clint said to Thor. "Steve, your fiance completely kicked Thor's ass at paint ball today. You definitely need to keep her now." Clint said, earning a punch to the shoulder from Thor.

"You too received a pride wounding beating today. Don't get too carried away." Thor retaliated.

Steve and I sat there laughing as the two pushed each other out of the room. Today was definitely a day worth doing again. I snuggled into my favorite spot when I'm around Steve. I felt him kiss the top of my head as we continued to listen to Clint and Thor argue.

"It sounds like you had a fun day then babe." Steve said with a chuckle in his voice.

"It was interesting to say the least. I did enjoy beating both of them though. I guess all of the target practice that I have been doing is paying off." I said, tilting my head up to look into Steve's baby blue eyes.

He leaned the short way down to my lips and pressed a loving kiss to them. I kissed back with as much passion and melted into the kiss, just like every other time I get to kiss him. I hadn't seen Steve mad, but it certainly couldn't be as bad as Chase when he was enraged. The thoughts of Chase being as good as kindness gets were once again wiped away and stood no chance against Steve's love. This is where I belonged and I didn't ever want to go back to what I had before. This is what family truly felt like and I have gotten so used to how things work around here that I wouldn't know what to do with a normal life anymore. This is my new normal and it's not going to change. The next step was to finally become Mrs. Rogers, and I couldn't wait.
