Your parents were having another argument.
As usual, it was about your current living situation. You were-obviously-still living with your parents. You had recently turned 22.
That was the problem.
Your mom didn't like how you still lived with her and your father, and the two would argue on and on about their opinions on the topic. Dad always argued that as parents, they should support you until you can get up and onto your feet.
Your mother always said that at the age of 20, you should already have a living situation figured out and that you were already 2 years past that deadline.
You decided to take a walk to try and take your mind off it, but instead, it was all you could think about.
Soon, the area around you became unfamiliar as you ventured deeper into the outskirts of your humble hometown.
Hurricane.
The houses along the road you were walking down were far more spaced out.
Bigger yards and bigger homes. The area wasn't cleared out, though. There were plenty of trees and foliage around this part of town.
No one really knew why these places were left untouched, but there were plenty of stories making up reasons.
This place has been around for a long time.
A very long time.
It'd been founded in the early 1900s, and it was now 2046. It was one of the only, if not the only, towns not constantly being updated. There weren't many new companies here, and there definitely weren't a lot of people here.
That made it exceptionally hard to get a job. Most hiring positions were taken the second they were put up.
The population was definitely a reason why no companies expanded to the area.
No one but the people who moved away knew for sure why this place was such a deterrent to people.
Better for us, though. This place being small meant less rent and down payments for houses were-aparently-really low compared to anywhere else.
Another good thing is that the internet still runs through here. It's in between two larger, more advanced cities, so they decided for convenience to keep phone towers and service lines running through the area.
Though that was one thing that was pretty pricey.
As you let it wander, your mind couldn't help but think back to the myths and conspiracies surrounding the decline of the area.
There were many, but the most common one was dubbed The Rabbit Killer.
As if sensing the drift in mood, the surrounding environment turned even more gloomy and dark.
Fog coated the ground, and the winds whistled and howled, piercing the air.
The tale goes like this.
A 7 foot golden rabbit was spotted around the area.
It soon started calling children over to it.
Any child that went near it ended up missing.
The creature had stark silver eyes that held nothing behind them. They were dull, lifeless.
Its movement was stiff and mechanical like.
Sometimes, it would stand under streetlights and wait for a child to approach it instead.
Other times, a hatchet or a kitchen knife would be bloodied and left under the last light it stood beneath.
But that was all just a fake tale told by your parents to make you go to sleep and stay inside at night.
