The thrum and buzz of office life was evident on this crisp summer day. It had been exactly one year since Kara Danvers had taken over as CEO of Danvers corp. She had been trained for this role her entire life, the heir to the throne if you will. Her ascension had been hastened by the sudden downturn in Jeremiah Danvers health. The male had been unwell for the last 11 months, his time as CEO drawing to a close.
There had been a series of heart attacks, that had made his position as CEO untenable. Of his potential successors, he had only two options, Alex Danvers and Kara Danvers. Alex was busy with her burgeoning career with the DEO and was not suited to the business world, her red-hot temper and fiery nature would be a hindrance in business dealings. So, this left Kara Danvers as the sole choice for taking over as CEO. Kara's soft-spoken nature and intelligence would make her a fitting choice as CEO. What was Danvers corp area of expertise? Danvers corp dealt in technology and funding initiatives that would help Meta humans and aliens adjust to living on earth.
A knock on the door echoed on the wooden oak paneled door that led to Kara's office, the sound would stir her from her thoughts as she looked out the glass window, the national city skyline was rather beautiful in summer. The sky was a brilliant blue colour, the clouds that hung in the sky were soft and white, looking fluffy to her superior vision. It was a little-known secret that Kara still assumed her role as Super-girl. Fighting crime when it reared its ugly head. The only ones who knew about her dual identity was Alex and the team at the DEO.
She hated keeping this part of herself secret but it was a necessary deception in order to keep her employees safe from reprisal if anyone with malevolent intent learned of her other identity. "Miss Danvers? Are you ready for your next appointment?" a soft Irish accented voice spoke from the other side of the door. Hiring Lena Luthor as her assistant had been a coup, a masterstroke in actual fact. It had not escaped Kara's notice that Lena was smart, lethally so, her mind was refreshing, a suitable foil to match wits with. In national city there were few who could match Kara's IQ, not to say the residents of the city were unintelligent, just that they were not as intelligent as Kara was.
Turning from the view with a weary sigh, Kara fixed her face into a brightly chipper smile, well aware that she needed to present a calm composed facade to her employees. Striding to the door, with a single pull she opened it to see her brilliant assistant looking up at her with bright green eyes, her lips parted as she took a breath, a coffee in her hands, the rich hot liquid filling the air with its distinctive aroma.
Raising said coffee cup to her lips, she had to stifle a moan as the tasty French roast coffee slid down her throat. "You always take the best care of me Lena" Kara purred, her tone sounding almost seductive. Taking this as a positive sign Lena drew in closer, a coy smile alighting itself on her features, her soft green eyes warm and kind as she looked at the woman she worked for. "How could I not? you are so kind... so warm and generous, completely deserving of a little kindness in return" the Irish woman murmured. This sentiment made the blonde blush a bright crimson color.
She hadn't expected anyone to say that much less Lena Luthor. Feeling happy that her office door was closed Kara looked more closely at her assistant and shyly smiled. "You mean all that don't you?" she whispered, her voice dropping a few octaves. Though a voice in her head whispered that she couldn't trust this, whispered that this was another risk that could end badly.
"Oh Kara" Lena intoned her voice dropping a few octaves to match Kara's own tone. The way Lena spoke sounded soothing, calming, relaxing even. "Asking for help has at best only ever been the equivalent of asking for a shovel." Kara spoke these words as her eyes hinted with the promise of tears to come, of how her emotions were spinning out of control. This was a relatively private way to show the inner conflict that so dominated Kara's mind. The reason for the conflict? She wanted to make her family proud, but she also wanted to be who she was, to shake off the expectations of being an all-powerful CEO. How could she reconcile both wishes, both dreams? At present she couldn't see a way forward. Lena and Kara were slowly becoming friends, were slowly becoming a fixture in each other's personal lives as well as their professional lives.
