It was dawn when I arrived at a spring of fresh clear water and drank deeply. My sensitive ears twitched at every sound in the woods. My senses were on wide alert for any predators that might be hiding nearby, hungry for unicorn meat. I'm valuable, since apparently eating unicorn meat gives immortality. Content, I swished my long silky tail as I quenched my thirst and then settled down nearby to rest in the shade.
Before I was transformed, my name was Raelynn. I didn't have a last name nor a middle name for some reason, but I don't need them. I likes calling me, even unicorn-me, Raelynn. Sweet and simple like myself and the animal I resembled.
I was a princess of the faraway lands that has no name. I don't really remember my family after so long, but I still recall they weren't the friendliest bunch. Only one person I cared for, and that was my brother Zander. We took care of each other, played when we were little, and knew each other perfectly. Even now, I miss him. The royal court was strict and commanded every tiny order be completed with perfection. I was trained hard to be a proper young lady. I wasn't a hopeless case, but still needed "work". Being one of the shyer princesses in the world, I obeyed meekly and did whatever was asked. Until Him came.
His name was Lysus. I believe he was a king from a wealthy place faraway from my kingdom. He arrived on a royal white horse, requesting my hand. My greedy parents, taken by his looks and manners, fell for him as well. As did I at first.
He was a proper gentleman. Patient and kind, he took me for who I was and treated me well. I was attracted as well, and I thought I found my true love. True love, I later discovered, was not what I felt. I liked him physically, not mentally, not with my heart. That was the problem.
When I realized this, it was too late. The engagement had already taken place and the wedding was closing in fast. I was instructed, prepared, and lectured to "be a good lady". This time, my stubbornness struck. I refused.
Saying that my parents were outraged was an understatement. They didn't know about true love at all either, didn't love each other. They just wanted money and wealth, and wanted me to give it to them. I didn't like this tradition of marrying for wealth. I wanted to feel actual love, and to find my own path. After my standing up to my parents, they no longer saw me as polite and proper. They saw me as a rebel. In the end, my "parents" kicked me out of the kingdom.
Exiled, I had fled to a village nearby, and was treated shamefully by the others. They asked me,"Why did you do it?" And scoffed when I told them about my thinking,"Foolish princess, you were so lucky to have a wealthy family and you just took it for granted." They did not understand as well.
A month later, Lysus came for me. He was furious. I had publicly embarrassed him, and he wanted revenge. I fled to the forest, where I was turned into a unicorn.
The idea of magic interested me. Lysus had used it to turn me. Magic could do a lot of things. It could cure poison, and cause happiness, or it could bring doom and be used for evil causes. Magic was dangerous, and I experienced it first-hand. Since I was a unicorn, I got powers, which slightly made up for my transformation. The idea that a unicorn exists and that it's horn has magic was all true, so I got special privileges. My power was strong and powerful, and was used to defend myself against other mythical beasts in the woods. I have never tried them on anything else than animals. Using them on humans is something I will never do unless the man is Lysus.
I live in the woods which I now call Mythical Wonders. Humans never venture here. It had food and water, so it's enough to survive on. The features are all beautiful. Silver vines cover glittering trees, and the clear sparkling water reflects the soft grass swishing in long lengths.
For the past years, I spent my life exploring my surroundings. I'm so used to it by now that I memorized it like a map in my head. During the first few days here, I remembered panicking at everything that moved and jumping around like a rabbit. I'm more comfortable nowadays, just raising my head.
I've changed a bit. Grown quieter, less rash, but more stubborn. I've learned to follow my heart and not others because of living on my own. But I still contain my sweetness I'm known for.
Overall, I'm still Raelynn.
As I lay there, thinking of the past events that happened decades ago, my ears shoot straight up.
Crack!
It's a sound of a broken branch.
Someone's here.
And it's not an animal.
It's a human.
