Fall Apart

Chapter 28

The weeks passed so quickly and before I knew it we were driving back home to Ohio. We drove up to the street we left on and I saw Lucas standing there, he was facing the other direction so I told Mary to stop and I ran off the bus and she went around the corner. I pulled my hood up over my face and walked over and saw that he was standing with one of his friends. I walked up and as I did I heard his friend ask. 

"Dude, what is your problem? You've been standing here for like two hours now!" my heart throbbed when I heard that and I answered him.

"It's because of me! Hi!" I say, putting on a different voice and trying to sound serious.

"No, I'm waiting for my girlfriend..." Lucas said, without turning around.

His friend looks at me confused and I nod, trying not to laugh again. We stand there for a bit and then his friend gets impatient.

"You might want to turn around then," he says.

He turns around and I jump into his arms. 

"God-damn, I've missed you" he whispers into my hair, not letting go.

"It's good to be home" I say, pretty sure his t-shirt now has makeup all over it, I'm crying so hard. 

We finally peel apart, but I refuse to let go of his hand, he wipes tears from my face. 

"I've traveled almost a million miles, and you're the only thing that has made me feel so safe" I say, and he smiles. 

We go together to get all of my bags then Lucas tells me that Evelyn and he had planned a birthday party for me, it would be held tomorrow, it was going to be held at a hall with an outdoor function. I was so excited and I already knew of the perfect dress, Sarah used to own it but it's too small for her and so I was just WAITING for a chance to wear it. Lucas can't wait to get back to his dorm and relax and when we do I instantly go to his closet. He shows me the suit that he is going to wear for the party. It was the same scruffy worn out suit he wore to the dorm party a couple months ago. 

"Alright, babe, I love this scruffy vibe you have going on, it really suits you, but my dress is really fancy, you need to match! Come with me" I say, dragging him out of the dorm and to my car. 

I drive down to a department store and steer him inside, he looks around, confused.

"What is this place?" he asks, and I'm shocked for a second, he's NEVER been in a department store!

"It's called a department store" I say, looking around.

"It's beautiful" he says, and I try to stifle my laugh. 

"First a deep breath, take it all in. Feel all of those halogens warming your skin. Smell how they pump in pure oxygen, they care" I say, as Lucas looks around. 

Then a store attendant comes up to us.

"Love?" she asks.

"Excuse me?" Lucas asks, and I quickly cover my mouth before I start laughing.

"Love, the new fragrance from Chanel" she says, going to spray a tester on him.

"Oh, no thank you" he says, pushing the bottle away gently. 

The attendant walks away and Lucas looks around at all the suits in the store, looking nervous.

"I know you're scared. Just think of the people you want to impress. Swallow your pride for me. Just nod yes and prepare, 'cause something's in the air!" I say, running with him into the middle of the store.

"I think it's love," he says laughing.

I couldn't decide which love he meant by that so I just laughed and moved on.
