Gary's POV
I had been summoned to the Commanders office. I didn't know what it was about, nor did the messenger who told me.
Flashback:
My heart sunk. There was no such thing as 'retiring' in The Grey Area and most people who went to the Commanders office didn't come back.
Grudgingly, I ran over to the office, not wanting to be late – the Commander doesn't appreciate those who keep him waiting.
The ornate metal door loomed in front of me. I sucked in a deep breath and knocked.
"Come in", said a deep voice. I pushed the door open and marched inside.
The room was dark and gloomy. There was a door off to the side open and inside I saw almost a hundred security camera screens inside.
"I didn't know I was constantly being watched", I thought. "But then again, I should've expected it".
I saluted, looked straight ahead and said "Sir".
"It has come to my attention that you have been serving The
Grey Area for over 10 years", he said.
"Yes Sir" I replied
"To reward you for you faithful service I promote you to an elite soldier. You now have access to all areas in The Grey Area.
Make sure you wear this at all times." He said, handing me a dog tag.
I replaced it with my old one and waited for further instructions. "I would like you to look after the mermaid while she is here", he said. "Take her to the bar-coding room for now, and then back to her cell".
I saluted and turned around and walked to the door. He paused me in the doorway.
"Make sure you don't loose her. If you do I might have to summon you to my office again."
A chill ran down my spine I realised that being promoted was most likely a death-sentence.
End of Flashback
I found laboratory 7 and opened the door. The fish girl was surrounded and the labbies were not treating her well. Her hair was a mess and her arm was bleeding.
I saw a labby whizz away with a tube of blood, making me feel sick.
I was tired of people ill-treating others and so I broke up their fun. Just because she was a prisoner, didn't mean that she should be treated like dirt.
"OI!" I yelled, "Leave her alone" She turned in my direction.
"Why should we listen to you?" a man on the girls right said. "You're not the Commander".
"I might not be the Commander, but I have special instructions to look after her. She is special after all", I replied.
I grabbed her arm and led her out of the building.
"Thanks", she said.
"That's ok" I replied. She turned to me and I saw recognition in her eyes. I smiled grimly; we had arrived at the bar-coding station.
