Chapter 8

Cordelia’s POV

The next morning I was jerked awake by a different guard, this one was female. She roughly pulled me up and I was shoved through the door. 

“So… where are you taking me?” I asked her. She didn’t reply.

“Nice weather today” I said as we passed a small window. It was pouring with rain. She still didn’t reply.

I soon gave up and we marched in silence until, five minutes later, we arrived at our destination.

I was surprised. It was yet another reinforced metal door, but that was not what surprised me. It was that inside of the room was a deep pool.

Sloane’s POV

I pulled the fish girl up and pushed her out the door.

We marched in silence after she had asked a few questions, and as I was not allowed to speak to the girl I did not reply. This gave me time to think over the confusing discussion that Gary and I had had last night.

Flashback:

I heard a thud in the room across from mine. I walked in and saw Gary sitting angrily on his small, hard bed with one of his books next to the wall, as if he had thrown it.

“What’s up 198394?” I asked. He didn’t answer.

“Come on, you can tell me”. I said.

“It’s just, ugh”. I waited patiently for him to continue.

“I was sent to kidnap a girl from Sydney,” he said.

“You don’t like her do you?”

“No way 198393!” he replied quickly, “it’s just… well you know how we don’t like people who are different here”, I nodded at him to continue.

“This girl was very different, like unhuman different” I was confused and looked at him strangely.

He continued and said “She’s a”, he lowered his voice “mermaid”.

“WHAT?!” I half whisper/shouted.

“SHHHH” He replied, just as loudly. “Well, they told me to take her to E16”.

“Oh” I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach, if she was at E16, she wouldn’t survive long. The longest amount of time for a prisoner to last in E16 was three months.

“The fish girl, she was different but not just because of what she was, she”, he paused and thought for a while, searching for the right word. “She has this air of confidence around her, like she’d already been through a lot and she wasn’t scared even when I used my best threats on her”.

I snorted “Well, that wouldn’t be very hard”. He looked hurt and so I said “But then again I have known you since we were eight. I probably wouldn’t be affected as much”.

He smiled at me and then continued to say “Anyway she’s not like the usual rag-tag bunch we get around here. I just wish I hadn’t brought her here she won’t last long enough for the Commander to let her go!” He sighed in despair.

“Hey, we’ll find a way to get her out of here if it means so much to you”.

“Thanks Sloane” He said.

“That's alright. But remember never say my name in public, okay Gary?” he nodded “See you round 198394”

And with that I left the room.

Gary and I had been best friends since we were eight.

It started when I was walking to school and a Year 6 ran up behind me and pushed me to the floor.

This was not unusual, the older kids in my town did this on a regular basis, but the fall had hurt and my skin had broken. Being the weak eight year-old I was I instantly started crying.

Suddenly Gary, who was new to the town, went up to the Year 6 turned her around and yelled, “DON’T YOU EVER, EVER, EVER DO THAT AGAIN!” while pushing her back.

The Year 6 was so scared that she turned around and started running at top speed to get away from him.

Then the tiny eight year-old Gary turned around and said, “Are you alright?”

I replied, “I think I’ll be ok” and with that we walked hand in hand to school.

End of Flashback

Snapping out of my daydream I realised that we were at the door that I was to drop her at.

I examined the door and saw that it had TESTING ROOM #3 on it.

I shut her in the cell and wondered what my life would be like if I hadn’t joined The Grey Area.
