Background:
On October 28th, the GDF's London base is raided by militants who steal weapons and equipment, including a highly experimental and dangerous serum derived from Godzilla's cells. After it is discovered that a traitor within the GDF helped the militants accomplish the raid, Captain Gordon leads a strike team to retrieve the stolen weaponry and kill the traitor. Gordon finds the turncoat, Dr Kenshiro Nakajima, preparing to inject the G-Cell serum into his infant Nephew, Ryuhei Nakajima. Only a few weeks old, Ryuhei has been born with a rare disease that his uncle has been unable to treat due to the resource shortages caused by Second Impact, and with time running out before his case becomes terminal, he made a deal with the militants so he could steal the G-Cell serum he'd been working on, knowing its regenerative properties could save him. Gordon tries to stop the doctor and in the ensuing struggle Kenshiro is shot and killed, but Gordon fails to stop the injection procedure. Guilt-ridden and concerned for the child's welfare, Gordon takes Mari in so that she can be constantly monitored by the GDF for any sign of dangerous side-effects. Ryuhei spend his first one or two years in a controlled environment while the GDF monitors her for any signs of G-Cell induced mutations. In addition to a resistance to disease and remarkably quick healing, Ryuhei shows a remarkable growth rate and learning ability, being stronger and smarter than other children his age. Other than that there appear to be no side effects, the serum working exactly as intended. Unfortunately the secret of how the serum was successfully stabilized went with Dr Aoi to his grave, so they can't replicate it. By this point Gordon's grown to love Ryuhei as his son and doesn't want his spending his whole life as a lab rat. Commander Namikawa agrees to let him out under certain conditions. Ryuhei would grow up as a 'military brat' as they are known, always moving with Gordon from one base to another based on the missions he has to lead, especially since Gordon is a man of action and would never take to a stable desk job, so he'd never have a permanent home or long-term friends and would be immersed in military culture his whole life. The fact that Douglas would often be away means someone would have to look after Ryuhei and that's how we bring in Akane Yashiro as his mother figure. As he grows up, Ryuhei would naturally start getting curious about why her father or Akane are taking her to be regularly examined by doctors when she never gets sick, and given Gordon's lack of tact, he'd probably just tell her the truth. I mean, he'd find out eventually so why hide it at all? She would have to keep it secret from any other kids and even adults she meets so that adds a further element of isolation and abnormality to his life. Then when he's six years old, Kiryu gets the neural interface upgrade. But because Kiryu's DNA Computer is based on Godzilla's genetic code, the system can't properly translate the motor control impulses of Akane's human brain to Kiryu's pseudo-musculature, an unfortunate oversight by the designers. The other candidates similarly fail to make Kiryu move. Miki Saegusa has the idea of letting Ryuhei try the interface and to everyone's amazement and shock his hybrid brainwave pattern (which Miki could sense with her ESP) activates the mecha. Naturally Gordon is hesitant to put his adoptive son into a giant robot and there's the obvious issue of his age. But with the GDF having no guarantee of when exactly the Nova will attack and Ryuhei the only viable candidate, they eventually concede they have no choice. From then on Ryuhei begins his training as Kiryu's pilot. Ryuhei seems to enjoy a challenge and is the only one of the Children who genuinely enjoys piloting Kiryu. Ryuhei may feel a connection with Kiryu because they both have Godzilla's DNA, something no human shares with him. Being a professional MMA fighter before he was military, Gordon may chose to take personal responsibility for Ryuhei's combat training, so that's something that could bring them closer together.
